Question ID: 358569
I am a broadband ethernet ISP in the kansas city and lawrence areas.
(SWB is the ILEC) I am looking for a way to fing businesses that
currently have a T-1 or DS-3 connection. Perhaps a master list of all
frame-relay connections?

Hmmm...this is a tricky one.

Have you tried an ARIN search? Head to:

http://ww2.arin.net/whois/

and type in: kansas city

You'll get a list of companies with "kansas city" in their name that
have reserved blocks of IP numbers -- these are all likely to be
T1-type connections, though I don't think that information is
specified as such.

Clicking on any company's hyperlinked ID name will give you additional
information (including -- quite often -- technical contacts).

Is this type of information useful?

Yes- That search returned 250 results. Any other similar ideas?

I can't think of any other tool that would useful other than ARIN.

However, there are other searches you can conduct. For instance, try
a search on MO -- you'll get results with a few listings for a guy
named "Mo", but mostly, you'll get Missouri related groups.

Which brings me to a search on: Missouri. You should get another 250
or so listings, many of them in the KC area (I'm presuming KC,
Missouri...is that correct?).

Let me know if this provides you enough listings to work with. If
not, I'm not sure what your other options may be, but at least I'll
know where you stand.

Thanks.

While an ARIN search will get you the companies with some sort of
internet appearence, it will not cover companies that do not have
their own IP block or branch offices located in KC. You will also get
false positives from various ISPs or telco like Sprint.

The only real way to get the names of companies with T1s or greater
would be to indulge in a bit of corporate espionage and aquire the
customer list from the local CLEC/ILECs as they won't be all that
eager to hand over their customer list to a competitor.

You would have the best luck by investigating a direct mail
advertising campaign. You would most likely be able to locate someone
offering a list of appropriate companies and send them a bit of
literature and follow up with a phone call. Look at the borders of
the junk mail circulars and you will find the names and contact
information for a few DMA companies to start off with.

"...to indulge in a bit of corporate espionage..." This was my
thought. I am hoping that someone with access would indulge me. I know
that SWB (sbc) has a record of every T-1 customer, because they
provide the copper loop. But you are right, the ARIN search turned up
only 250 names; I'm sure that there are more than 250 T-1's here
