I recently received a chain email that suggested a link between eating
chicken wings and increased risk of uterine cysts.  The basic argument
was

   1. chickens are injected with steroids to promote growth
   2. the injections are most often in the neck or the wings
   3. the steroid concentrations are hence higher in the neck and the wings
   4. ingesting these steroids is potentially harmful, and in
particular increases risk of uterine cysts.

The wording of the message was rather suspect, including phrases like
"this is a true story" and "forward this to all of your friends" --
like most good hoaxes.  The facts actually seem plausible to me,
though, and I couldn't find any references to this on snopes.com or
other hoax sites.

I'm very curious about the veracity of the facts in this claim, in
particular numbers (3) and (4).

Can you say Internet Hoax?

Being an organic rancher I'm not big on hormone or antibiotic
treatments but most farm animals are regularly fed antibiotics and
even hormones, These aren't normally injected. In any case, any spot
injection (IM or SC) of a substance would be widely disbursed through
the carcass in a few minutes, hours at most.

I certainly applaud any attempt to avoid animal antibiotics or
hormones by going "organic" but it certainly sounds to me like the
message you got was just another of the many urban legend internet
hoaxes.

I would be leary of claim 3 but claim 4 specifically may not be
correct although there is some evidence that hormones and antibiotics
are indeed harmful. I seriously doubt any evidence exists concerning
uterine cists.

estrogens are the principal hormones fed to livestock.  hormone
replacement therapy has been linked to a slight increase in the
incidence of cancer in post-menopausal women.

as far as i know, there is not a direct link between the two, but
there is just enough information here for people to try and connect
the dots
