Question ID: 358783
I am looking for sources of information (especially books) about
designing low-cost consumer products like toys and promotional items,
especially the design of electronics and injection molded parts. It
seems most sources from the U.S. and Europe focus mainly on high-tech
designers and hobbyists, not on people who need to solve a problem as
cheaply as possible and in a mass-producible way. I want a very
practical guide to making things cheaply. An example of the type of
book I am looking for is _Practical Electronics for Inventors_ by
Paul Scherz, which is excellent but more about electronics in general.
Especially nice would be a book that has lots of basic information,
philisophical-level insight, pictures, and/or case studies.

Hi tackle,

I've searched Amazon for you and have come up with several
possibilities - I hope at least one will hit-the-spot.

1) Plastic Part Design for Injection Molding : An Introduction
by Robert A. Malloy:
"This book reveals the basic background required by personnel in the
plastics field in designing parts for injection molding. It has many
examples and illustrations of real-life applications instead of
endless derivations of equations. It is a very useful, well
structured, easy to follow guide for assisting in your design and
knowledge of polymer related products."

2) Designing Plastic Parts for Assembly
by Paul A. Tres:
"A tool for facilitating cost effective design decisions for a reader
at any level of expertise in plastic parts design. A simple, but
detailed discussion of materials selection, manufacturing techniques,
and assembly procedures is a main feature of the text"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1569903506/qid=1086876340/sr=1-5/ref=sr_1_5/102-3071007-6196967?v=glance&s=books

3) Successful Injection Molding: Process, Design, and Simulation
by John P. Beaumont, Robert Sherman, Robert F. Nagel:
"By providing full color simulation output, animated filling analysis,
and practical data collection forms for product development on the
free CD-Rom, the author emphasizes the practical importance of this
book - an invaluable resource for every injection molding
practitioner."

4) Injection Molds: 130 Proven Designs
by Hans Gastrow, E. Lindner, P. Unger:
"Newly updated and now in its third edition "Injection Molds 130
Proven Designs" is a must have for everyone involved with designing
and building injection molds. The new edition has been revised and
expanded. Outdated designs have been eliminated to make way for new
technically developed designs and the overall number has now been
increased from 108 designs to 130 designs."

5) Modern Plastics Handbook
by Charles A. Harper:
"Modern Plastics Handbook packs a wealth of up-to-date knowledge about
plastics processes, forms and formulations, design, equipment, testing
and recycling. This A-to-Z guide..."

6) The First Snap-Fit Handbook: Creating Attachments for Plastics Parts
by Paul R. Bonenberger:
"Unlike most of the design reference book, this one gives design
engineers very good logical ways, i.e. design methodology, for
snap-fit mechanism design. It will avoid the mistakes a young engineer
might make, and the writer also provides several very good examples to
guide experienced engineers' creativity."
