Question ID: 359226
I need to find out what issue of Esquire Magazine (in or around 1945)
has an article about Marty Maher in it. I was told that it was
probably the June or July 1945 issue but I can't confirm that.

Marty Maher was the athletics director at West Point for many years
and the movie "The Long Grey Line" was based on his life.

Optimally, I would like to have the article faxed to me. For the
research of finding the exact issue, I would be willing to pay $5.00.
For a fax, I would pay $25.00. I will put $5.00 on this listing, but
let me know if you find a way to get it faxed and I will post again or
we can work it out directly.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

This one may be a toughy (though your local reference librarian can
probably help by networking through inter-library loan resources).

I checked this morning at the Everett (WA) public library, which has
an excellent collection of popular magazines in its stacks. They have
Esquire back to 1960; the Seattle Public Library only goes back to
1979.

Kate --

The NY Times has about 24 articles mentioning Maher between 1950 and
1998, when Col. Russell Reeder died at age 95. Reeder was co-author
of "Bringing Up the Brass," the autobiography of MAjer that was made
into the 1955 movie "The Long Gray Line." If any of those articles
are of interest, I can summarize them.

I really appreciate the suggestions, but it really must be that
specific article. The article that is in the Esquire magazine is
regarding Marty Maher's ability to point out future generals that were
attending West Point at the time. A friend's grandfather (who is not
a general :))was attending West Point at the time and remembers
hearing one of these conversations, and then reading about it. I
really thought it would be kinda easy to find this. :)

There is a simple way to get it faxed to you for possibly just the
price of a photocopy. You can go to your local library and request
the article be photocopied. There is a good chance your library won't
have it on hand but they will track it down through interlibrary loan.
There are plenty of large libraries that will own Esquire back that
far. Granted, you don't have the exact citation, but you've narrowed
it down to two months. Some libraries may be willing to go through
two months to search for an article.

Researchers, I'm fairly sure are not permitted to fax anything because
they are prohibited from personally contacting any customers.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for the suggestion! I will try that but I am still willing
to pay for this information unless I am successful :) If I am, I will
cancel my question.
