I recently inherited artwork by Gregorio Prieto, a Spanish artist who
died in 1992. My obligation is to sell the art and donate the money to
a charity chosen by the deceased. My research has revealed that there
is a museum and art school named after this man in Spain, but I am
unable to find any auction results that will help me establish value
and I have no idea how to find an auction house or other venue for
sale of the work. The pieces have to do with Don Quixote. Two are
lithographs, each numbered 17/17, depicting a man with a windmill
behind in the first and a man and a horse in the second. The
lithographs are on 30 1/2" x 19 1/2" paper, and the plate size is 23"
x 17". The other two pieces are similarly sized and framed passages from Don
Quixote which presumably represent the story behind the two
lithographs. They were purchased as a set in 1967 at Macarron, S.A. in
Spain and were described as "4 marcos de 93 x 65 mold. 7-19-HEL, con
armadura, pegar fondo en tablex y montar laminas de D. Gregorio
Prieto" for 3.102 pesetas--I have the original receipt, as well as
brochures from his shows and a book about his work (in Spanish) signed by the
artist. I also have an additional receipt signed by the artist for
the same works which reads "He recibido de miss (deceased's name), la
cantidad de quince mil pesetas, importe de dos litografias de El
Quijote, con sus correspondientes textos, obra original mia." The
works were purchased framed, presumably by either Prieto or his
representative, and they were apparently not framed for preservation
because there is some bleed through of the glue used in mounting at
the top edges of the lithographs. Because
Prieto is unknown in the U.S., I need the researcher to provide the
name of a qualified and willing appraiser and to identify a qualified
and willing sales representative such as a gallery or auction. The
artwork is in central Florida, and the sources located should be as
close as is possible. |
