Do you have a Austenal specific product in mind?

How far are you willing to travel to take a picture? Where are you located?

My appologies, when I referr to Austenal, I am not speaking of the
Dental products. I am more interested in circa 1960's and 1970's.

Hello Bigtow,

As far as I can tell from a preliminary search, Austenal marketed
dental plates and false teeth as far back as the 1940's, and their
familiarity with creating replacement parts for biological materials
led them to develop technologies for other parts of the human body
beginning in the late 1950's, such as hip joints, artificial knees,
etc.

I have found several articles that reference Austenal's activities
during these decades. along with a few of their advertisements for
their products.

Can you tell us with a bit more precision what it is you're after --
is there a particular product line you're seeking information about?
Or conversely, are there particular product lines that are NOT of
interest to you?

Any additional information you could provide would be a great help in
researching this challenging question of yours.

Thanks.

Thank you for the response. The dental products are of less interest.
The time when Austenal started developing the hip joints, artificial
knees, replacement spheres, and fracture fixation devices circa 1960's
and early 70's. Articles referencing Austenal's activities and
advertisements during this time period sound interesting. A picture
of a packaged product (ie. fracture fixation device) w/insert would be
of most interest.

Hello again, big-tow-ga, (good name, by the way!).

I've been delving into the available info on Austenal, and I'd like to
ask a few more clarifying questions, please:

1. I'm not fully clear yet on the corporate history, but Austenal
either sold off or licensed some operations to other companies,
especially Howmet aka Howmedica. Do you want ONLY info on Austenal,
or are its spin-offs/affiliates/whatever of interest as well?

2. As a for instance, I've come across a 1969 Howmet magazine ad,
"Today a tragedy: tomorrow a Smile" about a young girl with bone
cancer who received a custom-made artificial humerus that restored the
use of her arm. The humerus was made of Vitallium, a material
invented by Austenal -- originally for dental work -- and now used by
Howmet for osteopathic work.

3. As the above indicates, at least some of the work done here was
custom made, and not likely to appear as an off-the-shelf,
pre-packaged product. Is obtaining a product shot and an insert an
absolute necessity for you? I'm not sure I will be able to accomodate
you if it is.

4. There are many articles touching on Austenal, Howmet, Vitallium in
the context of non-dental bone replacements. These range from
advertisements, to newspaper articles about medical and business
events, to medical studies in professional journals, some of them
critical of Vitallium products. Are these types of materials of
interest? If so, where would it be best to concentrate my research?
Is there a particular type of printed material, or a particular use of
Austenal products, that is of the most interest here?

5. And lastly (sorry about the lengthy list), I cannot provide actual
articles or advertisements to you, since they are all protected by
copyright. I can summarize them, provide brief excerpts, and give a
full cite so that you can obtain the articles yourself if you so
choose. I want to make sure this is clear, so you will not have
unrealistic expectations about the materials I can provide.

Let me hear your thoughts on how to best proceed on all this. Thanks.

Hello bigtow,

Hope I didn't scare you off with my convoluted questions. If you have
any additional perspectives to offer, I'd like to hear from you.
Otherwise, I'll just keep on looking to see what I can find...
