I have two Win2k PCs, both reasonably "fresh" installs with Spk4. (By
"fresh" I mean recent - a couple of weeks old - and with very little
software installed.)
Somehow I have broken standard behaviour:
- In Explorer, I cannot drag & drop files to other explorer windows,
nor right-click drag to create shortcuts etc. However, I *can*
copy/paste (eg Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V) from one location to another.
- In IE, I cannot open a link in a new Window, either by
right-click/"open in New Window" nor shift+left-click.
I would guess this has something to do with OLE/COM/DCOM as both
machines have been used for "OPC" which uses DCOM, and some settings
in dcomcnfg have been tweaked. NB: I don't think any knowledge of OPC
(or lack of it) is relevant to finding a solution.
What I am looking for, ideally, is (a) what is likely to have caused
it, and (b) how I can fix it without a re-install (and without
breaking something else :-).
I suspect the answer is readily available online, but I can't think of
good search terms to start from. And I wanted an excuse to try Google

Hello Hollymcr,
Your problems sure seem to be a big prick in the back. I've looked
around the Net and seen mentions of other problems similar to yours,
and most mention not being able to solve it until they reinstall the
operating system or reformat their driver. However, one of those
forums I've seen do state a relationship with the DCOM program part. I
haven't found how to make tweaks in that area, though. For now, I'm
wondering if replacing the Windows Explorer in your boxes from a
working computer might do something to help. Please try it out and let
me know what happens.

Replacing explorer.exe made no difference :-( The files looked the
same before the change anyhow (same size/date/etc) but I copied an
alternative across and rebooted to see if anything changed.
This strategy is probably the right one, if only I can determine the
right file to replace :-)
Additionally, I have worked through everything I can think of in
dcomcnfg comparing against a working PC and failed to find anything
different which, when changed, fixed anything. I suspect I have a DLL
mismatch somewhere.

Update:
Following a hint at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=816085
for a completely unrelated question, I tried editing the registry:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole
.. and renamed (note: not deleted as per MS KBase, in case I need it
later) the "DefaultAccessPermission" key to
"-DefaultAccessPermission". This appears to have fixed the problem
without so much as a reboot.
However, the MS KB clearly states that this key is used for DCOM and
the chances are I have now broken the DCOM setup (I can't test it here
now). So I am sure we are in the right area, but not sure we have the
real solution.
If anyone can find out some more detail on this I'm happy to consider
that an answer to the question. Specifically: Which permissions are
required for Explorer to work properly, and how do I set them
(DefaultAccessPermission is not "user-friendly")?
techtor: you might want to pass this info back to the forums you
found, or let me know which forums so I can do it. I'd be interested
to know which forums anyway.

Hello Hollymcr,
Actually, this is my idea. I assumed that since the problem appeared
in Windows Explorer, I was wondering if corruption of that program was
the cause. Well, that's ruled out now. However, I certainly have found
a reference somewhere on the Web saying that the problem can be
DCOM-related. I don't know much about this aspect of computers, so see
if your steps can solve the problem, else another researcher can help
you.
