Like many famous phrases, this comes from the Bible, specifically John 8:32.

Here are several translations of the verse.

King James Version:

"And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

New King James Version:

"And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

New International Version:

"Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

Here you can read the passage in context. I've chosen the New King James Version:

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My
word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and
the truth shall make you free."

They answered Him, "We are Abraham's descendants, and have never been
in bondage to anyone. How can You say, 'You will be made free'?"

Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits
sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house
forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you
free, you shall be free indeed."

My search strategy in locating this information consisted of a visit
to BibleGateway, a very useful Bible resource.

I hope this helps. If anything is unclear or incomplete, please
request clarification; I'll be glad to offer further assistance before

I came accross your comments and was able to help someone using the
verse. A friend got into debt and was undecided whether to tell his
wife about it. Hearing, the verse was a clincher and he was able to
tell his wife about the problem. We're 20,000 miles away(Philippines)
and yet the word of God can transcend time and distance. Thanks.
