Windows XP Question.
Many times I need to access something on my desktop but have many
programs open as well as "sticky notes" and quite a few internet web
pages (Google usually being one of course). Is there a single
keystroke to "close all open windows" so that I can access my desktop
without having to close them all individually?

Hi gogsi,

Here you go... you can close all windows with two keystrokes (right
click / close), but you have to select each window you want to close
first.

Quickly closing multiple windows at once:
"...an easy way to close multiple windows simultaneously. To do this,
simply hold the Ctrl key and click on each window's icon in the
taskbar. Then simply right click any one of them and click close."

Closing Multiple Windows
"If you just opened a number of separate, related windows (a folder
inside a folder, and so on), there's an easier way to close them all
than one-at-a-time. Hold down the Shift key as you click the X button
in the upper-right corner of the last window opened. Doing so closes
that window and all windows that came before it."

Thanks Hummer
But, I'm afraid none of the answers do much to help.
If I've got 20 or so windows open, I still have to close every single
one which is what I've been doing anyway. Actually, I've been
minimizing them as I usually want to go back to them after going to
the desktop.
Your suggestion of two keystrokes, plus selecting the window,
(although quite valid) means 60 keystrokes! I was looking for just a
few keystrokes to access my desktop.
By the way, it's Alt-F4 to close. I've used that one for ages. When
you Shift-F4, it does a search in some programs and, with web page,
shows the history.

Hi gogsi,

I'm going to ask the editors to remove my answer so another researcher
can work on this - I'm sorry for causing you a delay (since it's the
weekend, my answer may not be removed for a day or two). I think my
first suggestion is neat, but obviously won't work for you - hopefully
someone else will be able to help you.

Sincerely,
hummer

Hi gogsi,

Ok, I sent my email to the editors - hopefully you'll hear from them soon.

Just to clarify, if you had 20 windows open, my solution would require
22 clicks, not 60. You'd hold down the CTR key and go along the
taskbar and click on each icon to select them and then right click and
close on just one of them and all would close.

Cheers,
hummer

Voila !!!
Grrrreat ! (That's Scottish)
The Windows key + D does the trick.
Excellent. I would never have figured that one.
Thanks so much

Dear gogsi,

Thank you for your enthusiasm and nice rating, but I wasn't the one
who posted your solution - grthumongous deserves all of the credit. I
had noticed his solution but thought it didn't suit you because it
only minimizes and doesn't close the windows. At any rate, I'm really
happy you are happy - a big thank you to grthumongous too!

Sincerely,
hummer

I was given a very helpful reply at first but, one that involved just
as many keystrokes or more than before.
Then, I was given "Hold down Windows key (between Ctrl and Alt) and the the D key.
Works like a charm

on XP, try the following key combination.

Windows_logo_key + D

The Windows Logo key is usually between the CTRL and the Alt keys.
Hold the logo key down and then hit the D key. It will minimize (but
not close) all windows and take you directly to your Desktop.

You can also do Windows key + M for the same effect. However you
can't press win+M again to restore all windows.
