Hi

I would like to use some famous 'news' and 'historic' photos in a new
board game. For example 'The Moon Landing' '1966 World Cup Final'
'Elvis' 'Concorde' and many others along those lines, including famous
adverts eg Coke.

Who do I contact for permission to use these photos and how are fees
worked out? I'm based in the UK

Thank you

Hello,

Perhaps I can....help, that is.

There are a number of agencies that have massive collections of
well-known photographs, and make these available on a licensing basis.
The fees depend on the photo(s) and on the type of use intended for
them.

As an example, one such service is Corbis:

http://pro.corbis.com/

Have a look at their site. If it seems useful, I'll be glad to post a
few more links to such services as an answer to your question. That
way, you can shop around a bit!

Let me know.

Hi

Thank you for your post - yes that is the type of thing I need. But I
really need the places that have the historic news photos covering the
main events like - Moon Landing, 1966 World Cup, Thatcher, Elvis,
Falklands War, Nasa Shuttle etc..

If you know where I can find those famous photos and others please let me know.

Thank you

I'm glad you seemed to like the type of service at Corbis, and I also
know where you can find famous historic photos....at Corbis!

Please go back to the site:

http://pro.corbis.com/

In the upper left hand part of the page is a search box. If you
enter: [ 1966 World Cup ] you'll get thumbnail pictures of more than
40 pictures of England defeating Germany. Enter [ Elvis ] and you'll
get more than 1,000 pictures, and another 1000 for [ coca cola ].
Clicking on any small picture will take you to a larger version that
you can view in detail.

I'm sure you'll find pictures of virtually any famous
event/person/thing from the modern age. And like I said earlier,
there are other services that can do the same.

Should I list the ones I know about as an answer to your question...?

The people who took the photos will probably hold the copyright but
there are specialist agencies who can sort these out for you.

As for Coke ... C'mon they should pay you!

It's called sponsorship.
