This error message can occur if the printer is not turned
on prior to sending the request to print, or if the cable
is not well-connected.

I've also seen this occur with Lexmark printers for no
apparent reason. Rebooting the computer with the printer
turned on resolves the problem.

Let me know if and how this applies to your situation.

The message on the computer comes up if the printer is turned on after
the computer is running.

Yes, I've seen this happen with Lexmark printers. When Windows
starts up, the printer drivers are automatically loaded. If
the printer is not in the 'on' state when Windows loads the
drivers, you may sometimes get this error message upon turning
the printer on after Windows has loaded, and trying to print.

When this happens, the solution is to leave the printer on
and reboot. When the drivers are loaded at Windows startup
with the printer on, the error should not occur.

Now, ideally, one should be able to leave the printer off
during startup, turn it on when you want to print (*before*
sending the Print command - if you send the print command
and then turn on the printer, you will invariably get an
error), and print the document.

When this fails to occur, what worked for me was to leave
the printer on at every reboot, for several reboots. Then
I ventured a reboot with the printer off, turned on the
printer and sent the Print command with no error. I don't
know exactly why this worked, but it did. It seemed to
have something to do with 'seasoning' the system into
believing the printer will be on when Windows loads.

If this convoluted and mystical explanation somehow
resolves your problem, let me know, and I'll post it
as an official answer.

It could be the cable. If its parallel, make sure its a
bi-directional cable. If its USB, let me know.
