I've been given a gasoline-powered Homelite HLT-16 30cc Edge Trimmer /
Weed Whacker, and I need to know how to use it, this afternoon if
possible.

1) How do I check the oil?
2) Do I merely put gas in the tank, or is a gas/oil mixture required?
3) Is there any cleaning and/or lubrication I should perform before starting it?
4) How do I advance the cutting string as it wears down?

Is there anything else I should know before cutting off my foot?

Thanks.

1. There is no separate oil reservoir or dipstick to check. see #2

2. It uses a gas / oil mixture which must be accurately mixed
according to the ratio listed in the manual. If you are unsure about
mixing, Home Depot and other store sell little bottles of oil that are
measured out for exactly one gallon of gas. Make sure you are fairly
accurate with the ratio.

3. There is really no specific maintenance you need to check before each use.

4. The most common type of feed is bump feed. When the line is worn
down about halfway of its length, you bump the head (spool) on grass
and this will allow more line to advance. However, this often gets
tangled or filled with grass which may require you to advance by hand
with the trimmer off and carefully loosening the spool and advancing
the line, but making sure not to allow to come unwrapped or too loose.
Homelite is a low end trimmer so it gets stuck more than most.

5. Wear eye protection, hearing protection and jeans. This trimmer
will be very loud (enough to damage hearing) and it can throw small
rocks with a lot of force towards you during trimming. Only hold the
trimmer as a righthanded person would since that is how they set up
the machine. (Holding it as a lefty you might get burned since the hot
part of the engine will be against you.)

Also:
Before strimming any long grassed areas in shade, or other areas where
you can't see very well, make sure you clear said area of Toads,
Frogs, and pet feces, as the 10,000 rpm nylon cutting string will make
a mess of amphibians and your clothing.
