Hi! Thanks for the question.

The National Institutes of Health is the federal department providing
the annual funding for stem cell research.

"The NIH funds research scientists to conduct research on existing
human embryonic stem cells and to explore the enormous promise of
these unique cells, including their potential to produce breakthrough
therapies and cures."

According to a very recent report, the federal funding provided by NIH
is very limited. $20 million for embryonic stem cells research and
$300 million for adult stem cells.

"The National Institutes of Health awarded only about $20 million for
work on embryonic stem cells last year, compared with almost $300
million for work in adult stem cells -- which many scientists say hold
less promise. Adult cells don't require federal approval for funding."

Request for Answer Clarification by jpowell1949-ga on 15 Jun 2004 06:08 PDT
The question was what is the "total annual funding". NOT just from
the NIH. For example California, is trying to raise THREE BILLION for
stem cell research. Again, I am interested in the total annual
funding of stem cell research. Any published estimate from a credible
source would be acceptable.

Hi jpowell1949-ga!

Actually in answering your question, I tried to find other sources and
also came upon the california budgeting. But you were asking for a
"total annual funding". A total funding is rather difficult to find
because of the following reasons:

1. Some organizations do not publicize their funding totals.

2. Plus the term "Total" denotes the idea of "All" entities. There is
no way of knowing for sure if we have covered all entities.

Thanks!

You could have asked the researcher for a clarification to your
question instead of rating it with one star and closing it. The
researchers on here are more than happy to continue answering
questions until the customers are satisfied with the answer.

This is the first time I have ever used this service. I did post
clarification. It was not obvious to me, that by rating the answer I
was "closing it". I thought rating the answer and my clarification
would have been helpful. I still need the answer. Should I go to
Google and tell them I've screwed up my own question?
