Hi wergie,

The name of the song is "The Circle Game" and the artist is Joni
Mitchell. The lyrics of the song can be found at the following link.

"The Circle Game" - Joni Mitchell
http://mytwyyearbook.tripod.com/music/m027c.html

"Yesterday a child came out to wonder
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star

And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return, we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

Then the child moved ten times round the seasons
Skated over ten clear frozen streams
Words like "when you're older" must appease him
And promises of "someday" make his dreams

And the seasons they go round and round
And the..."

"Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now
Cartwheels turn to car wheels through the town
And they tell him " take your time, it won't be long now
Till you drag your feet to slow the circles down"

And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return, we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty
Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true
There'll be new dreams, maybe better dreams, and plenty
Before the last revolving year is through

And the seasons they..."

"This is my favorite TWY song about the "wonder" years. To me, it sums
up the entire process of growing up. It is a little sad, but also a
little hopeful. It is typical of Joni Mitchell's lilting style.

A note from Dr. Stephensen, Associate Professor of Music Theory at the
University of Oklahoma: "The frequent aperiodicity of Mitchell's
phrase rhythm and the resultant avoidance of regular hypermeter, when
combined with her acoustic textures, gives her music an earthy yet
refreshing quality. It is homespun, yet innovative. We feel that have
always known it and yet we sense that we have never before heard
anything quite like it."

Like I said - lilt. :-)

The first part of the chorus, in multiple voices, is reminiscent of
children singing a nursery rhyme. I particularly like the image of
"dragging your feet", in the hope of staying in "The Wonder Years"
just a little while longer.

It is the closing song in Episode 27 "Mom Wars", over clips of Norma
and Kevin (Norma watches a young Kevie, as he wobbily rides his bike
down the sidewalk :-)

This song is available on the "Ladies of the Canyon" CD, and also on
the 1996 "Hits" CD. The "Hits" CD also has "Both Sides, Now", "River",
and part of "Unchained Melody" (although not the exact version) from
TWY. "Hits" also has "Woodstock", which she wrote, but was popularized
by CSN&Y - and, finally, a booklet of all the song lyrics."
