Question ID: 361316
How do I stop Windows Media player popping up when I insert a CD. I'm
running Win 98 at home, and running Windows 2000 at work and I can't
figure it out for either. I tried looking in file associations. This
is a really obvious thing to want to do, and it amazes me I can't find
this info after a brief web search or in the help.

Hello Ponderer

Like all things with Windows there are a number of different ways to
stop this from happening. The way I have detailed below is the way
that worked best for me.

Open Windows Media Player, and select Tools->Options. Then click on
the file types tag. In the list scroll down until you see Music CD
Playback, there should be no tick next to this item. Click OK when
this is un-checked.

There is also help on this feature in the Windows Media Player help
file. To read this press F1 in Windows Media Player and then the
Index tab on the left hand side of the window that pops open. Scroll
down until you can see AutoPlay, left click on AutoPlay and then click
Display. The help file will then give you the instructions as to how
to stop the music playing automatically when a CD is inserted.

Another way to stop this from happening when you insert a CD is to
hold down the SHIFT key when you close the CD player drawer.
