Looking for short story I read years ago in a science fiction anthology. I can't recall the name or author. The basic gist of the story was that a hard scientist (physicist?) bet a sociologist that the sociologist could not apply their specialty in the real world. The sociologist creates a club (women's sewing?) that spreads around the world. |

This is "The Snowball Effect" by Katherine Maclean; first published in Galaxy Science Fiction, September, 1952; reprinted in "The Second Galaxy Reader of Science Fiction" (H. L. Gold, ed., 1954) and many other anthologies. |

That's the one. Thanks! I'm cusrious to know whether you just knew the story or there was a way to search for it. |

The disappointing answer is that I just knew it, and was able to double-check my answer (but I mistyped the author's name, which should be MacLean with a capital L) with my personal collection of old magazines and anthologies. Otherwise, I've found the group rec.arts.sf.written (Google Groups) to be a good source of (free) answers to this particular type of question. |
