URGENT - NEED WITHIN 16 HOURS I am trying to find the worldwide market size (dollars/units in 2003) for business telephones. I'll define business phones as the combo handset/speakerphone that sits on most everyone's desk at work. Those could be analog or digital phones, I just need to figure out approximately how many are in use 2003 or how many were sold in 2003? This number does not need to include audio conferencing or video conferencing phones. I'm looking for just the phones that sit on people's desks. To clarify further, I'm not looking for any of the following: - wireless/cell phone/mobile phone data - consumer cordless phone data - exclusively IP phone data (while this can be a component it does not indicate the entire market) | |

Dear Amyjean, I am pleased that the white paper that I provided in the comment box answered your question. To make it official I am reposting the information below. --------------------------------------------------------- According to the following white paper ?There are over three hundred million existing digital business telephones installed around the world and that base is still growing.? This white paper identifies current industry projections for the IP Telephony market and key factors driving the transition to IP. ?However, the global installed base of traditional PBX systems is extremely large and the overall business phone market is still growing. Analysts estimate that there are currently over 300 million traditional digital business telephones installed globally. As most organizations expect their PBX system to last an average of 5 to 10 years, it would take this same time period for the entire installed base to be converted, even if IP Telephony immediately gained 100% market share.? (..) ?Traditional business telephones, with business-grade features, are priced at $180 to $450 depending on quality and the level of features supported.? CITEL: IP Telephony Migration Strategy - Bridging Two Worlds http://www.citel.com/documents/WP0901-1v1_3.pdf It appears that the white paper that I provided was written in 2000 or later. From page 4: "Another way to look at the market trend is to consider the sales of the 3Com NBX (a market-leading IP Telephony system). In all of calendar 2000, 3Com sold approximately 5,000 NBX systems. This figure was matched in only the first third of calendar 2001. In an environment where most PBX manufacturers are reporting a downturn in sales, 3Com is growing its NBX sales by 200% per year." CITEL: IP Telephony Migration Strategy - Bridging Two Worlds http://www.citel.com/documents/WP0901-1v1_3.pdf Cotel provides a number of white papers on the following webpage. http://www.citel.com/index/index.asp The white paper that I cited is the first listing. Here is the description. Title: CITEL Technologies IP Telephony Migration Strategy "This white paper identifies current industry projections for the IP Telephony market and key factors driving the transition to IP. It looks at the current market environment and the opportunities, advantages and functional benefits afforded by the new convergence technologies." Sometimes the date of document is included in the URL. I believe the Citel document was published in September 2001. At the end of the URL it says WP0901 which I interpret as White Paper September 2001. Many sites use this date format for their URL's. http://www.citel.com/documents/WP0901-1v1_3.pdf Search criteria: "business telephones" +million "million business telephones" "business telephones" worldwide Best regards, Bobbie7 |

you may find this interesting: TELE-SERVICE NEWS November 2003 LENGTH: 987 words HEADLINE: HEAVY READING PUBLISHES MARKET PERCEPTION SURVEY OF TELECOM BODY: "Heavy Reading, New York, the market research division of Light Reading Inc., has published the largest market perception study of telecommunications equipment and manufacturers ever undertaken. Titled the "Heavy Reading 2003 Telecom Equipment Market Perception Study," the 150-page report is based on a massive, invitation-only survey of service-provider employees, which garnered a record 770 responses worldwide. The respondents gave their perception of 304 vendors (85 public, 219 private) in 22 product categories, identifying which names they recognize and which of them they consider market leaders in terms of price, performance, product quality and reliability, and service and support. Key findings include the following: -- Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) dominates mindshare in the carrier market. In the eyes of most service provider employees, Cisco has successfully transformed itself from an enterprise-focused vendor to the leading telecom supplier in the world. Its lead isn't insurmountable, however: Juniper Networks Inc. and Nortel Networks Corp. (NYSE/Toronto: NT), for instance, surpassed Cisco in several key market perception categories. -- Lucent Technologies Inc.'s (NYSE:LU) reputation has passed a tipping point from which it may be impossible to recover. Lucent's brand recognition remains strong, but the company is rarely seen as a leader on price and performance. -- Most vendors are unknown by more than half of their potential customers. Cutbacks in marketing budgets are having an adverse effect on brand awareness across all telecom equipment product categories. -- Efforts by international equipment makers to crack the North American market are showing mixed results." |

Not quite what I'm looking for. Carrier and networking information doesn't translate to the phones on the desk. Unless you can provide a valid metric to extrapolate it. Or you can provide the number of phone users. |
