I'm about to get my BA in sociology from a top tier school and my best understanding is that different cultures define and qualify sex and its according roles differently. Take for example a society such as ours where a woman might be regarded as a powerful business figure juxtaposed with a fundamentalist muslem culture where a womans role might not leave the home. In both cultures the biology and genetics that make up the two women are nearly identical but the variations in the way that sex is expressed is a world apart. Also look at the fact that many cultures see child rearing as a womans job, but in todays America more families have working mothers with child rearing fathers. In this aspect sex roles have more to do with culture than with biology. |
