Question ID: 361798
I need a cheap easy way to coat one face of aluminium extrusion to
provide thermal insulation. Ideally the coating is a "thick"
powdercoat or stabilised PVC, in a range of colours. The extruded
aluminium will also be powdercoated over the remainder of its visible
surface. A service provider in Melbourne Australia would be useful.

Hi justed -

What kind of monthly volume?

Clarification of Question by justed-ga on 22 Jun 2004 01:54 PDT
The monthly volume is around 100 tonnes of aluminium extrusion.
Surface to be treated/coated would be around 100mm perimeter in 6
metre lengths - part of the same surface is currently powdercoated in
fashionable colours.

What kind of price are you looking for?

Ideally I would say less than $5/sq.m. (AUD) visible perimeter. But I
would consider up to $10.

Hi justed,

Can you tell us anything about the thermal insulation requirements? Is
there a particular R-value or physical thickness that you are looking
for in the coating? Also, what kind of color variability are you
looking for? What is the shape of the extrusion? A tube? Lastly, can
you give us an idea of the application that this will be used for? All
this information may prove helpful when conferring with coating
suppliers.

The R value should be 0.3. Ideal thickness, same as powdercoat - 80 microns.

We use 8-10 powdercoat colours we would need to match these. None of
the sections is hollow. They vary from simple flats or angles to
convoluted shapes. The application would be to the interior faces of
sections used in architectural windows.

I have been asked some technical questions - simply put I want
something to coat aluminium that gives it similar thermal properties
to plastic or wood. The thickness has to be something I can manage,
it is not critical. The coating needs to look good and be available
in some standard powdercoat colours. It should not cost the earth.
It should be easy to apply and be repairable if scratched. It also
needs to be structurally robust in daylight for many years and
colourfast for 10 years.

Hi justed,

I've contacted several powder coating services with your requirements,
and I'm waiting to hear back from them. If I find a few that meet your
needs as described I will post an answer. I'll try to find at least
two or three different possibilities.

Hi justed,

I'd like to clarify one more point, which I think was unclear to me
originally. Are you planning to apply the coating yourself or are you
looking for a service to apply the coating for you?

Thanks,
smudgy.

Hi Smudgy

I would prefer a service provider, but I am open to doing it inhouse
if the entry costs are not prohibitive.

Ed

Hi justed,

Believe it or not, I am -still- working on this question, though
things are proceeding very slowly.

I've been in contact with a representative of an Australia-based
powdercoating supplier. He is trying to get thermal insulation values
for the company's coatings from the engineers. I imagine this might
take some time; if the question expires feel free to repost your
question, and if I get good information for you I will post it.

Good luck and sorry for the delay,

smudgy.

Thanks Smudgy - I will repost if you ask...
