Hello Saintly,
As far as I can tell, there is no ranking of the most popular American
camp songs of today. But I did find several web sites that list
favorite camp songs and that I think you may find useful in creating
your own songlist.
One of the best of these was a site found through the search terms:
camp counselor songs. The ?Philmont Song Book? is contained within a
website that is a compendium of all kinds of good ideas for summer
camp counselors.
http://www.inquiry.net/outdoor/campfire/helps/you_do.htm.
Click on Philmont Song Book. This collection of classic campfire songs
that never seem to lose their appeal includes chord changes. Philmont
appears to be a Boy Scout camp, but the collection is by no means
limited to ?scouting songs.? All would be appropriate for the 10-18
age group.
Another site I liked very much, and that I believe you will find useful, is:
http://www.christysclipart.com/camp.html
Christy?s campfire songs collection is large and growing larger by the
day, as people send her their favorite songs. A number of the lyrics
are set to well-known melodies (like ?Turkey in the Straw?) and
Christy has provided a MIDI of the melody for a number of the songs.
Another excellent site for general camp ideas and activities,
including music, is the website of Camp Rena:
http://www.camprena.com
If you are interested in ordering reasonably priced songbooks, you can
do so through this site.
I hope this helps. Happy Camping!
