How many people in the U.S. receive some form of assistance for
healthcare from the government (all government programs, not just
Medicare)?

National as well as regional? (For example, the state of Oregon has a
health care system, albiet failing.)

Yes, the question is all levels of government.

For an additional two dollars, could you tell me the answer to this question:  

How many dollars were paid to hospitals through the Medicare program in 2004?
