Hello johnsargent-ga,
Welcome back. It?s nice to see you?re still working on your painting
techniques. I found some general information for you about using
Acrylic Glazing Liquid but I suggest that you also read the
instructions on the tube/jar/bottle to get specific information about
the particular brand and product you?re using. You can also look up
the product on the web and review any technical and product notes
available from the manufacturer.
Acrylic Glazing Liquid is used generally to slow down the drying
process of whatever project you?re working on. How fast your
particular piece will dry will depend on the object/material you?re
painting, the thickness of the layer you painted, the other media you
mixed with the AGL and the atmospheric conditions when you?re
painting. All of these will influence how long it will take for your
project to dry.
I hope the links I?ve found will help with your projects. I especially
recommend the Acrylic Forum at WetCanvas as a place where you can ask
questions and discuss your projects with others who are also working
in acrylics.
Best wishes for your artistic expression.

TECHNICAL NOTES ON DRYING
Although acrylic paint tends to dry quickly, several techniques and
additives can extend wet time. This Information Sheet discusses how
acrylic paints cure and describes how that process can be controlled
and manipulated to an artist's advantage
***** This document gives you an excellent explanation of the two
stages of the acrylic draying process and the variable conditions that
impact how long they take.

ACRYLIC GLAZING LIQUID ? Product Information Sheet
Increasing Working (Open) Times:
1. Seal surface to be painted using a Satin or Gloss base paint. Matte
paints, such as a flat house paint or artist's gesso, soak up the
acrylic glazes too quickly, thus reducing working time. Sealing the
surface, ideally with a gloss base, allows for maximum working time.
2. Any breeze flowing over the glazing surface will make acrylic
glazes dry more quickly. To maximize the working time, cover or close
vents or windows, which blow air directly across the surface. Once the
technique has been completed, open windows and allow proper airflow.
3. Weather conditions greatly influence working times. Hot dry
climates and direct sun exposure will reduce working time. Ideal
conditions are cool, rainy, high humidity climates.
4. Applying a layer of the Acrylic Glazing Liquid to the surface
before applying the colored glaze will increase the amount of working
time.
5. A spritz of water to cool down and moisten the surface will
increase open time. Also try lightly misting surface while working.
This is especially useful for maintaining a wet edge. Use a horse or
plant mister for best misting application.
6. Have paints and tools ready before starting. Keep them wet, out of
direct sunlight and cool.
7. On large areas, apply the acrylic glaze in a jagged, "puzzle-piece"
manner. Work towards the wet edge, leaving 3 to 6 inches unworked.
Stipple, rag, etc. up to this unworked wet edge. To continue, work
across the area by adding more wet glaze to fit into the wet edge
"puzzle". This technique helps to break up the design so that it
appears more natural.
8. Only apply glazes as far as you can reach. Try to work with another
person when painting a large surface, such as a wall.
9. Upon completion, utilize conditions that speed up the drying
process, such as breeze, higher temperatures and lower humidity.
***** This product information sheet gives you a good explanation of
the properties of acrylic glazes and how various conditions will
impact the drying time.

WORKING TIME: 2 hours working time when tinted with 15% latex paint
(i.e. 6 parts glaze to 1 part latex) 1 hour working time when tinted
with 25% latex paint (i.e. 4 parts glaze: 1 parts latex)
DRYING TIME: 8 hours to overnight, depending on film thickness(68
degrees @ 55% RH). Use oscillating Fans to speed drying.
***** The length of time needed for drying the glaze depends on
various conditions. Be sure to read the entire data sheet to get a

Golden Glazing Liquid
Acrylic Glazing Liquid is a medium to mix with Golden Acrylics for
creating glazes for interior application on walls or furniture.
Acrylic Glazing Liquid's slow drying time allows sufficient working
time for a wide variety of glaze and faux finishes normally
accomplished with oils. It is also excellent as a blending medium for
fine art application. Available in Gloss and Satin.
***** Slow drying is a basic attribute of acrylic glazing liquids.

Acrylic Glazing Liquid:
GOLDEN Acrylic Glazing Liquid was made for interior decorative and
faux finishing. It is also proven to be quite useful in fine art
applications when a slower drying paint is needed. Equal blends of
paint to Glazing Liquid are suggested to begin with, then adjust as
needed for desired transparency. Acrylic Glazing Liquid differs from
straight Retarder because it is a mix of Retarder, acrylic and water
that forms a film by itself. This means that artists can add as much
medium as they desire without the concern of poor film formation. The
freedom allows the artist to concentrate on creating art instead of
worrying about blending concerns. Refer to the GOLDEN Information
Sheet on Acrylic Glazing Liquid for further details and suggestions.

Mediums & Gels
A common myth about acrylic is that it thins best with water. One
complaint about acrylic is that it dries too fast. In fact these two
things are related. By adding water to acrylic, the quick evaporation
of water speeds up the overall drying time. Today there are many
creative options for acrylic painters. Mediums and gels can be used to
create texture, change the thickness and alter the paint?s body.
Golden Artist Color has led the way in making acrylic mediums for
every application.
Golden Acrylic Mediums and Gels offer a tremendous range of effects.
Most of the products under the title of ?Mediums? are pourable. These
include Glazing Liquid, Matte and Polymer medium. Glazing Liquid is
formulated for painting in thin layers with an extended drying time.
Matte Medium is useful for extending color and decreasing gloss. It
can also be used as a ground instead of gesso. Polymer Medium can be
used to extend the paint, create glazes and enhance the translucency.
It produces an oil-like feel due to the increased flow from the brush
to the canvas.

Glazing Techniques with Golden Acrylic Glazing Liquid and Heavy Body Acrylics
This project is a great way for you to learn three different ways to
use Acrylic Glazing Liquid (AGL): to smooth the application of paint,
to blend the paint and to create a glaze. Soft synthetic bristle
brushes work well for these techniques.
