delete files from an
inccessible boot device

Clarification of Question by kassel-ga on 20 Jun 2004 06:46 PDT
Sorry I was a little unclear.

Ihave filled the hard disk so it won't reboot. I am running NT4 and
nobody can find a boot disk. I know if I could get into the C Drive I
could get rid of some files to obtain some space. I'm trying to avoid
having to reformat the C drive and loading windows.

Regards
Kassel

you mean you can't boot from the device but can access it or you can
access the device at all ??

Secondly what kind of boot device are we talking about ?

Thirdly does the hardware see the device ?

Put the Hard Drive in a windows NT or Better (windows 2000 or XP) Add
the Drive as a slave or on the second IDE controller. Then boot the PC
and you will see the drive in "my computer" and you will be able to
delete or copy whatever you wish.

do you use Fat16 or NTFS ?

If you use NTFS you will need an NT4 boot disk if you use FAT16 you
can use any old boot disk or even boot from a windows 95 / 98 CD and
drop to dos

also there is a utility (freeware) available that can build its own
bootable floppy and allows you to read / modify NTFS partitions you
can find it here

http://www.ntfs.com/products.htm

If all else fails you can attach it as a slave drive in an other machine

thats well done, ive never managed to fill my hard drive so much that
it wont boot. how did you do that? And how do you know that a 'filled'
hard drive is stopping your computer from starting? I'm not trying to
make you look like a dummy either, just never heard of this :-).

do you get an error message that says that your hard drive is full?
was it filling up, just before you last shut it down?

But seriously, you can find the bootdisks for NT4 at http://www.bootdisk.com
