I found a watercolor signed by an artist I believe to be Benjamin Kelman and dated 1935. The subject is a youngish man wearing a fedora-type hat. The signature is "Benj" Kelman (done in pencil). The work seems to be a first-go at the work because you can see the pencil sketching beneath the paint and his signature has been done twice, with the first erased and still visible. It was framed here in Southern California. Even to my untrained eye, this painting is quite good. When I tried to find info about artist it was very limited and only found a couple of entries. Can you tell me more about the artist, what his work sells for and where I can get more information (books, etc.)? |

Thanks rico - askart is the source I had also found. I'm hoping someone will know a bit more about the artist or a source where I can find out more. |

With all due respect, then, perhaps you should consider paying askart slightly more than double your $5.00 question. For $11.95 you can get a 24-Hour Membership to askart which will give you access to their database of auction records and prices on Kelman. I noted that they had records on at least two pieces of his. Fwiw, Kelman was born April 2, 1887 in Romania, and died in 1957 in the U.S. An internet site estimates a signed Kelman oil at $1,000.00 - $1,500.00 USD. Note: the following link takes a *long* time to load. See Item #200: http://www2.icollector.com/catalogs/view_lots_forprint.cfm?catalogid=2492 regards, rico |
