Hi There !

I need to buy some neodymium (rare earth) magnets. These are
typically rated from N35 to N50, based upon their strength. Any
strength is fine with me.

I've bought these on EBAY in the past, in sizes ranging from
penny-sized to stapler-sized. But the prices are now too expensive.

A 5-star answer would be 3 sources of these magnets, hopefully surplus
or wholesale. I'm a cheapskate !

All comments greatly appreciated !

Thanks.
ron

P.S. The magnets don't have to be "pretty"----some of the best I've
bought were chipped, and came from old wiring assemblies. Thx!

Hello Ron,

Thanks...that's very kind of you. Here's the repost of the
information, and I look forward to hearing how your transactions work
out:

Why not drop these folks an email:

http://www.strong-mag.com.cn/NdFeB%20MAGNETS.htm

and see if they'll make products available in the amounts you're
interested in. Couldn't hurt to ask, eh...?

It may also be worth checking in with these folks, too, if you haven't already:

"...these surplus magnets are an incredible value: as little as one
fourth the cost of new neodymium magnets..."

Good luck.

Of course, price ranges vary and since you weren't explicit on size or price...

Hi Crythias !

I greatly appreciate your comment. I have purchased from both KJ and
Wonder Magnets before. They both have excellent service...and full
retail pricing.
I'll check out Rattlesnake Magnets. There must be a wholesaler or
surplus dealer out there somewhere.

Thanks again, Crythias. You are an altruist !

Hello Ron,

There are neowhaddyacallit magnets available here for prices starting at 15 cents:

http://www.indigo.com/magnets/neodymium-magnets.html

Is that the sort of price range you're looking for?

And what are you doing wih these things anyway....?

Thanks, pafalafa !

The magnets on this site are regularly priced, bit I appreciate you
forwarding the lead.

As for the uses, where do I begin? Neodymiums are to magnets what
Ferraris are to AMC Pacers. (I know. My Pacer died at 40,000
miles...)

You should order a few of these Neodymiums for use around the house or
workshop. You'll be sold!

Thanks again.

Maybe I will...came across one picture of a magnet the size of a
quarter holding up a sizable section of railroad track!

Anyway, whay not drop these folks an email:

and see if they'll make products available in the amounts you're
interested in. Couldn't hurt to ask, eh...?

nronronronro,

I've found quite a few websites offering neodymium magnets, but it's
hard to know whether they meet your price requirements. Since there
are so many different sizes and shapes of neodymiums available, is it
possible you could give us a few examples of common sizes and shapes,
and how much you would be willing to pay for them?

Thanks,
smudgy

Hi Smudgy !

Normal prices would be those at KJ Magnetics or Wonder Magnets (see
the comment of crythias above). They are retailers.

I am looking for prices 20%-50% cheaper. The only places I've found
such prices are with used magnets and surplus shops. Used magnets
typically come from industrial assemblies which are thrown out by the
original purchaser.
Also, magnets which are chipped or odd-shaped are cheaper. EXAMPLE:
I once found some 2" banana-shaped magnets at 60% off retail.

Thanks for asking !

Hi again nronronronro,

I've found a few industrial suppliers of neodymium magnets, but
they're the type of place that a) tend to have a hefty (~$100) minimum
order and will only give you a price with an actual quotation. Is
there any chance that your needs could be great enough that you would
be above the minimum order at one of these places? If so, what kind of
parts would you want to order? Or would you prefer sticking to
catch-as-catch-can surplus purchases?

Thanks,
smudgy.

smudgy--I appreciate all your help with this. I believe pafalafa's
leads are exactly what I need. smudgy, I plan to send you my next GA
question to thank you for all your help with this one. Please look
for that question in the next 7 days or so. Thanks again!

pafalafa---Please post as an answer so I can give you five stars.
I've already heard back from Strong Magnet in Shanghai. Isn't the
internet great?!
They came back with a detailed proposal---very impressive. Their
pricing appears to be 45% off local prices, plus the magnets are
actually new and not used. On the other hand, the "FOB China"
shipping charges may or may not kill the deal. We're still
negotiating. Thanks again, pafalafa.

P.S. Why is it, every time I write your name I start craving Cajun
food? heh heh heh
