Just to be clear, enabling javascript in IE consists of going to
Tools -> Internet Options -> Security [tab]. Settings for Internet
should be set to medium, which should allow Active Scripting, but
you can click on the Custom Level button, and scroll down to make
sure that, under Scripting, Active Scripting is enabled, as well
as both of the other options under this heading.
Secondly, before completely giving up on your current browser,
I recommend paying a visit to Fred Langa's Browsertune site.
This site will run your browser through the wringer and may
succeed in diagnosing and fixing the problem you're having:

And finally, if, in the end, you must reinstall your browser,
there's a way to do this. While it's true that there is no
way to uninstall IE6 (unless something's changed in the past
couple of months), and it's also true that you can't reinstall
it over the copy you have without getting an error message
saying that the install was aborted since you already have
a copy, there is still a way around this.
The trick is to change an entry in the Windows Registry to
fool Windows into believing that you don't have IE installed.
Then it will permit the installation, which should restore
your browser's functionality.
The following page on BleepingComputer.com provides thorough
instructions on both changing the registry entry to fool
Windows before reinstalling IE6, (Method 2) as well as another
method of repairing IE, using scannow. Just scroll down to the
section for Windows XP. There is also a link on the page for
downloading a standalone copy of IE6, without going through
the Windows Update site:

Much of the information I've provided results from my previous
experience in dealing with these same issues on my own system
as well as those of other customers here.
While I'm reasonably certain that, somewhere in the process of
following the recommendations I've given you, you'll find your
browser working again, I also realize the risks in attempting
a long-distance diagnosis of a computer problem without the
benefit of hands-on access. So be sure to ask for help if you
find the need along the way.
