I am trying to find the papers for Eric Horne, author of an
autobiography"What the Butler winked at" published in england in 1923
by Werner Laurie. I need to discover the identity of his employers
about whom he was so rude that he disguised all their names

Dear julesbaby-ga,
I have been unable to locate the papers for Horne, so I have
approached it from another direction. Have you a copy of his book? Did
he refer to in his early career being a butler for a Justice of the
Peace? If so, I may have some information.

Dear julesbaby-ga,
In addition, is there any information on his age, date of birth or places he lived?

Eric Horne worked for a doctor, then a general, then a baronet, then
an Earl of...(Blank) then a Duchess and then an Indian Prince. I think
he was born in about 1865. and was brought up "not very far from
southampton" . No clues to his father's trade. His brother had a shop
in Fulham. Eric married and had a son. He lived and worked in London
mainly though went with his employers on their annual trips to
Scotland. But no Justice of the Peace as employer that I can find
mentioned.
Does any of this help?

Horne was "for fifty-seven years in service", according to the full
title of this book ("first published October 1923")

"What the butler winked at : being the life and adventures of Eric
Horne (butler) for fifty-seven years in service with the nobility and
gentry / written by himself",

Dear julesbaby-ga,
Thank you for your clarification. I?ll post this as a comment as I
cannot confirm whether it is the same person.

A search of the UK census returns for 1881 and 1901 reveal a Charles
Horne who was a butler. He was of a similar age as that of your
author. I can find no Eric Horne. Of course, it could be a non de
plume, but it is possible that he was known by the name Eric. Many of
my Victorian ancestors were known by a name different from their
christened name.

These are the details, hope they may be of interest.
