I cannot change the screen resolution on my new computer. I am using
Windows XP Home. It is set at 640 by 480 @ 16 bit. I am reusing the
monitor from my last setup. It is a Mitsubishi Diamond Scan 17HX. I
did go to Display Properties > Settings and even > Advanced, to no
avail.
 I think I need a Driver.

Hello Sunspot53

The driver you require can be freely downloaded from the internet from
the excellent Drivers Collection website. A direct link to the driver
page for your monitor is here:

http://www.driverscollection.com/?file_id=21418

Once you have downloaded and installed the driver you may need to
restart your PC (I would do this for good measure in any case as it is
always a good idea to start something fresh).

To install this driver the easiest way is this:

1) Right click on My Computer on your desktop and select Manage.
2) Click on the Device Manager name on the left hand side of the
screen in the window that pops open.
3) Double click on Monitor to expand the list.
4) Right click on the monitor shown in the list and select Update Driver
5) Choose "Install from a specific location"
6) Check "Include this location in the check" and ensure that the
location of your new driver is in the box (you will have to unzip the
driver from the zip file you downloaded).
7) Click Next and Windows will search for the driver.
8) Follow the rest of the wizard to its conclusion ensuring your new
driver is selected.

To then change the screen resolution the easiest way is this:

1) Right click on your desktop and select Properties.
2) In the window that opens click on the Settings tab along the top.
3) In the middle of the screen it should say something like:
   Display:
Mitsubishi Diamond Scan 17HX on XYZ (where XYZ is the name of your
graphics card)
4) Use the slider to select your desired screen resolution and click OK.

Further instructions on changing your screen resolution can be found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/enable/training/windowsxp/screenresolution.aspx
http://www.helpmate.net/runaware/screenresolutionchange.htm

If this does not solve your problem please ask for clarification and I
will do all I can to help. (It would also be useful to know what the
line in part 3 above states.)

And here's how to check: right-click on the "my computer" icon on your
desktop. Choose "manage" from the menu that pops up. Find the Device
Manager. You can find out about your graphics card there. If it says
something like "VGA adapter" then yes, XP did not find your graphics
card and you'll need a driver for it. It might also list a driver but
say that it isn't working or correct--it should have a yellow circle
and exclaimation point next to it if that's the case.

What resolution did you used to use for that display, and under which
version of Windows?
