Hello mysite,
There are numerous excellent cardiothoracic surgeons in the UK.
Realize that this answer is rather subjective as well.
If I had to narrow it down to one, I would select Gianni Angelini as
the best. My results are based on experience, publications, and
research.

This site may help you come to a decision:
How to select a surgeon:

Dr. Foster
"You can also visit the Dr Foster website. Dr Foster, a service set up
in collaboration with the Department of Health, aims to give
information about local NHS and private healthcare services available
and to help explain what choices patients have and how best to use
them"

This page has a list of cardiothoracic surgeons, denoted by a blue
check. Waiting times to see a particular surgeon and the hospitals in
which they practice are also found here.

Hospital Ratings from NHS. On this site, you can find out information
on top hospitals in the UK. "To get three stars, the trust must pass
the Department of Health criteria on key targets and in its CGR have
scored one or more IIIs and no Is (on a scale of I - worst to IV
best). If a trust is borderline two/three star on key targets, it is
promoted to three stars if, in its CGR, it scored three or more IIIs
and no Is."

Please consider these articles, snippets of which I have included
here, regarding rating top doctors and mortality rates:
"Mortality rates have been published in the US for the last few years
and what has generally happened is surgeons in private practice have
taken on the simple cases, leaving the difficult cases to the
university hospitals. As a result, surgeons at university hospitals
have higher mortality rates that make them look bad in the ratings,
when they are actually the better surgeons.
"We?re going to have patients who don?t understand statistics
believing a surgeon with a one per cent mortality rate is better than
a surgeon with a three per cent rate, which is not necessarily the
case."
http://www.nhs.uk/nhsmagazine/archive/april02/feat13.asp
Speaking of St. Georges Hospital, London:
"Between 2000 and 2003, our mortality rate for aortic valve
replacement was 18 deaths in 299 operations ? a rate of 6 per cent.
That this is higher than the national average reflects the severity of
the cases we deal with. However, so far this year our mortality rate
has been far lower ? only 1.5 per cent. So our mortality rate is
improving to the point where it may soon be better than average.?"

I hope this helps you select a great surgeon, and I wish you the best!
Please ask for an Answer Clarification, before rating, if any part of
my answer is unclear. This will enable me to assist you further, if
possble.
