Question ID: 364646
I am trying to compare three specific colleges head to head, with an
eye to which is "the best" (although they are each quite different
from the others) in the opinions of objective third parties, graduate
school admissions officers, and alumni of the schools themselves. The
three institutions are (1) Richmond, The American University in London
(www.richmond.ac.uk); (2) The American University of Paris
(www.aup.fr); and (3) The Honors Program of the University of Hawaii
at Manoa (www.honors.hawaii.edu). I have been through all three
websites and am familiar with what the schools themselves say. What I
am seeking here, however, is as much of an objective, third-party view
of the schools by people who should know. To put it another way, if
one was applying to law school in the US, and all other factors were
equal, which of the three would be perceived as having been the best
undergraduate preparation?

While I doubt that there exist any head-to-head comparisons of these
three schools (outside of what could be done on the Business Week
site), the best answer to this question would include comments or
reviews of the schools from current or recent graduates, college
admissions or guidance officers, objective third-party books or
guides. I am also interested in lists of where recent graduates from
these colleges went on to graduate school, as well as in lists of
notable alumni from these schools. Obviously, the more complete the
answer and the more different perspectives, the better, although a
quick response would be very helpful.

Hello yorker-ga,

This turned out to be a very tough research project. As you suspected,
it was impossible to find head-to-head comparisons of the three
schools. Despite the difficulties involved, I was able to collect
quite a lot of information about each of the schools you?re
considering. I looked for articles, reports, surveys and other links
that would give credible and recent information about the academic
programs and reputations of these institutions so that you could
evaluate them for yourself.

The greatest difficulty in coming to a conclusion about how to compare
these schools is that they are all very different in what they offer.
I also don?t know what educational and other factors matter to you the
most. Taking these issues into consideration, along with all the
information I?ve collected, I will guide your thinking about what I?ve
found.

Richmond, The American International University in London
---------------------------------------------------------
I rank this school last among the three you?re considering. I was not
able to find much information about the school, its programs,
students, graduates or faculty despite an extended search. They simply
don?t seem to be active academically and don?t have a noticeable
academic reputation. I was able to find a few negative comments about
them on some discussion boards but these were balanced by positive
comments as well. Overall, this seems to be a very mediocre
institution. To answer your hypothetical question asking ?if one was
applying to law school in the US? I don?t think a degree from this
school would be very impressive. Either of the other two schools seem
to have a better track record.

American University of Paris
----------------------------
I was able to find a little more information about this school. They
seem to have been working on improving their offerings and I was able
to find many more articles and other references to their faculty
especially in the fields of economics, political science and
philosophy. I didn?t find any negative comments about this school but
I also wasn?t able to find any enthusiastic endorsements either. I
doubt that this degree would be highly considered for admission to a
US law school unless you?re planning to emphasize international
practice. It might be possible to find additional information about
this university with some digging.

The Honors Program of the University of Hawaii at Manoa
-------------------------------------------------------
As could be expected, there was a lot more information available about
this school than about the other two. Most of it is focused on the
school as a whole and not on the Honors Program. The University of
Hawaii at Manoa has a lot of performance and satisfaction surveys on
their web site. Many of these were taken to help with their recent
accreditation review. These should help with your evaluation. This
university also has an international flavor but it?s focus is the
Pacific Rim. I believe that graduation from this Honors Program would
be more impressive to a prospective graduate/law school than the two
international programs you?re using for comparison.

I hope that the information I?ve collected will help you to review
these schools so that you can draw your own conclusions.

Wishing you well.

Richmond The American International University in London may be in
Britain, but it is by no stretch of the imagination a British
university. As far as I can tell, it doesn't even have a Royal
Charter. Its degrees are accredited in the UK through the Open
University - a body providing correspondence courses for adults.

You'll be pretty severely limiting your international experience at an
American University. I doubt very much that many British students have
a) heard of it b) plan to attend.

Richmond would appear to be in third place, but you haven't given me

Hello again yorker-ga,

I?m glad that the information I found was useful and I?m happy to
follow your directions to try to find additional information on the
American University of Paris.

This is a small, liberal arts college (about 800 students) that is
accredited in the United States but not in France. It?s best
majors/programs seem to be in International Business, International
Affairs & Politics and European Cultural Studies & Philosophy. There
is an international faculty and some of the ones in the International
Affairs fields seem to be fairly high profile. The school offers a
four year baccalaureate program and it seems to be also very active in
promoting its education abroad and summer programs.

I hope that the additional links I?ve collected will give you a better
sense of what they?re about. Going back to your query about US law
school preparation, AUP may be a good fit ? especially if you?re
interested in Europe and the Middle East. If you?re interested in the
Pacific Rim, the University of Hawaii would be more appropriate.

Good luck on choosing a school.

The American University of Paris is a four-year, independent,
non-profit liberal arts college. Founded in Paris in 1962, the
University offers outstanding international learning opportunities
within the American system of higher education. The student body
numbers about 800, of whom approximately 35% are American, 10% French
and 55% are from more than 80 different countries.

Most students come to the University to pursue a three- to four-year
course of study leading to a degree, but transfer and visiting
students are also welcome. Student mobility to and from other US
institutions is assured, as the University is accredited (MSA) and
licensed in the United States. American in its structures, its
academic policies, and its philosophy of education, the University's
English-language undergraduate degree program is characterized by
intellectual excellence and the opportunity for cultural interchange
among a diverse population and a strong, multi-national faculty.
