Question ID: 365074
I am looking for a soltuion to manage data between two computers. I
have a laptop which I create word documents, excel spreadsheets, image
files, etc. I am looking for a software that will "sync up" my laptop
with a server for backup/file versioning. Basically, I have two
employees both with laptops, I need any NEW documents that have been
created on the laptop to be backed up on the server (in file folder
layout). The software should compare what documents are on the server
-vs- whats new or updated from the laptop and automatically transfer
the files at the end of each day or on command. Please provide
products that meet this need, along with pricing and resources. Thanks.

Hi curiogeorges!!

Unfortunately Mac OS X appears to donīt have a feature like the
Briefcase that Windows offers, the only sync tool on OS X is iSync,
that don't fit your needs. See the following page for references:
"Apple - iSync":
http://www.apple.com/isync/

But I found a software that do all that you want and more!!
This sofware is ChronoSync and it is not very expensive, it costs only
$30, here is a brief description:
"ChronoSync is the simple solution to the tedious task of
synchronizing your files across different folders or disk volumes.
ChronoSync provides an easy-to-use method for keeping files
synchronized between your laptop and desktop computers. ChronoSync can
also be used as a lightweight backup utility to automatically keep
working copies of your data in a safe place, such as your server.
Setup a synchronization in minutes by choosing your source and
destination folders. Add rules to include or exclude certain files.
Then test to see if the correct files will be synchronized. Once you
are happy with the results, save the choices you have made in an
individual sync document that can be reopened and modified later. Now
perform the synchronization immediately or, better yet, schedule it to
be performed automatically at the time and frequency you need."
See its Overview page for more features deatails:

Also see the FAQs page:

You can download the program from here (A pdf document compressed into
a .sit file - StuffIt Compressed Archive File -):

----------------------------------------------------------

There are other sync programs that can help you, but in my opinion
this one is the best choice.
Here is a list of other sync programs:

"FoldersSynchronizer": (Full version $40, Lite version $20)
"FoldersSynchronizer is a nifty and popular utility for Macintosh
(Classic and MacOSX Jaguar and Panther) which synchronizes and
backs-up files, folders and disks. The user can choose one or more
pairs of files/folders/disks and then they will be
synchronized/backed-up exactly. FoldersSynchronizer is available also
as lite version."

version history, upgrade prices, ordering info, is at the "Release

"You Synchronize": ($39.95 after rebate)
"You Synchronize is designed for Mac OS X users who keep files in more
than one location and need to synchronize those files on a regular
basis. With You Synchronize you can effortlessly backup or synchronize
files and folders."

"Synchronize! Pro X":($99.95)
It is a professional-strength file synchronization and backup utility for Mac OS X.

Search strategy:

Offline files and folders is built in to windows xp explorer.exe
Map a drive to the server. Move your docs there. Set folder to be
available offline.

Hi, curiogeorges-ga.
That's what the Briefcase is in Windows. I'm sorry, I don't know if
MAC has a similar software. Here is information on using the Briefcase
in Windows:

I hope it helps!
