Hello, I am trying to connect 2 computers in such a way that they can share files, printers, etc. One is running Windows 98, the other Windows 2000, professional. They are connected together via a wireless router (one wired, one wireless). Now I imagine that there must be an easy way to make the two see each other on the network (put the right protocols, etc., in control panel), but I am darned if I can work it out. And I am in a bit of a hurry. If anyone knows, and can rattle off the right answer, that would be fine. If anyone knows of a website, that would be fine too. If anyone has a similar setup, and can just look at their control panel settings, that would be fine too. (And I am not looking for a lot of detail - I am reasonably confident at fiddling with computers - Win2000 is new to me though.) (I have administrator rights on the WIn2000 machine.) (Oh, one more thing - they are both connected to the internet, and work.) | |

Hi Jeremy, I believe on each box you need to right click on Network Neighborhood, open Properties and select File and print sharing and then configure that (it will walk you through the process.) If the button is not showing in Network properties on the 98 box, there is information on the Microsoft site at this URL: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q309537 Once the file and print sharing is set up on each machine, on the machine the printer is connected to, go to Start>Settings>Printers> right click on the icon for the printer you want to share and click on Sharing and follow the wizard for this procedure. After you have shared the printer on the primary machine, on the other machine, go to Start>Settings>Printers and add printer. The printer you add is a network printer...and it will now see it as available. Use the wizard to configure it. I'm assuming since you said the machines are already networked, that is not the issue and you've got the Network Neighborhood icon on the desktop. If not, please post a request for clarification, and I'll give you help on installing that. Good luck and happy computing! readersguide |
