A friend of mine is named Kovis Lavelle McFarland......his mother told
him that she, while pregnant with him,  was reading a novel and named
him after the character in that novel.  It would be a long shot to
find this probably obscure work.

It might be helpful to know in what time period the novel was written.
Approximately how old is your friend? That might help us narrow things
down somewhat.
