Question ID: 365856
I used to be able to go to this site
http://www.oru.ru/foto/oboi/_razdel/reiting/2/spisok/
and download wallpapers for my desktop for free by right clicking the
picture after selecting the 1024x768 link.

Its stopped working lately. Every time the window opens up for the
1024x768 picture (and the 800x600), I get a little icon where the
picture should be that looks like a red x. If I right click anyway to
Save Picture As..., that option is not available. There is a Show
Picture option when right clicking, but it does not do anything.

The site is in a foreign language (what language is that?), so I cant
tell if there is something posted there about what is going on. The
300x400 res picture you can save, but that is not good enough for
desktop wallpaper.

I would really like to start getting these wallpapers again. I know
there are lots of other sites, but I want this one because it is so
comprehensive. It used to work just fine.

Can anyone help?

I would like to know how to get the Save Picture As working for
1024x768 for pics from this site.

I had no trouble at all viewing and downloading pictures here. First,
I tried clicking on the image itself; then once it was fully loaded, I
clicked on the 800*600 and 1024*768 links. Viola. Then I tried going
directly to the 800*600 and 1024*768 from the thumbnail page. That,
too, worked.

HOWEVER, I have high speed Internet access, and it took some time for
the 1024*768 image to fully load, and I spent several seconds looking
at a blank screen with no downloading progress. So perhaps the problem
is your connection. Have you changed the way you connect to the
Internet? Or have you changed telephone lines? Are you having slower
downloads in general, or just on this site?

I have a high speed connection. I do notice that this site tends to
load pages a bit slowly though. When I click for the 800x600 or
1024x768 image, the new screen is blank for a couple of seconds, and
then that little red X icon pops up.

Why does kriswrite's browser show the 1024x768 image, and my broswer does not?
I have Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106. Are there any security
settings I should look at?

I to tried to get the actually http address for the pic, and tried to
go to the pic directly, but it redirected me to the home page.
sublime1-ga, you said "Someone knows what they are doing..." Do you
think this site does not intend people to download there images
freely? But then why does kriswrite get them no problem? And maybe
once every month or so, I will come across a site that also throws me
the little red Xs instead of the images. ??? Explorer setting?
Firewall setting?

Download Mage is 25 bucks. I don't want to go down that route if
other's are getting the images for free.

sublime, you contend that the site does not allow me to download
images freely. If that's the case, why is kriswrite-ga able to? I why
was I able to in the past?

dreamboat, I did try deleting all the temp internet files, but still
no luck. I do that pretty regularly anyway.

For some reason, my browser will not display those pics, and the same
problem occurs on some other sites (rarely). If someone can tell me
why...

Problem solved. I (temporarily!) turned off my Norton Internet
Security Firewall, and now I can download the pics no problem.

I had no difficulty in viewing these images in all resolutions. But,
as mentioned in the question, when I tried "save target as," I
obtained a file that was just a red X.

I was able to copy & paste the image using the clipboard, so the
images can easily be obtained through this method.

Hmm...I had no difficulty with the "Save As" function.

The little red X is your browser's way of telling you "There is
suppose to be a picture here, but I don't have it". That is why your
browser can't view it, save it, etc. It simply isn't there.

Usually this is the result of a dead link in a web page. That is, the
URL in the <IMG> tag is pointing to a non existant file.

However, since others report that the image is loading, then that is
probablly not the case here.

I recommend that you hit refresh on your browser when accesing the
site to make sure you have the most recent HTML.

lucky2beon...

I'll post this as a comment, due to all the controversy, and
the possibility you may not be able to use the information.

If you're getting a red x, this indicates the image isn't
loading, which may have to do with your connection, as noted.

Both size images load for me, but when I right-click to
download, the file being saved has an .htm extension,
so I checked the source code, and the image is embedded
in a webpage inset with a 1-pixel border, so it looks like
a picture, but is, in fact, a webpage. This has been done
to prevent downloading of the images.

You can get around this by checking the source code and getting
the URL for the embedded image. You can also right-click the
image and select Properties to see the URL. For this page, e.g.:
http://www.oru.ru/foto/oboi/download.html?file=7520.jpg&size=1024

...the URL for the actual embedded image is:
http://www.oru.ru/foto/oboi/image/1024768/7520.jpg

Ideally, you could plug that into your browser, view only
the image, and download it from there, however, someone
knows what they're doing, and this results in a redirect
to the homepage.

I can get around that by using a downloading program, such
as Download Mage:
http://www.dlmage.com/

This allows me to paste the image URL into a box and
download the image without any problems. Unfortunately,
this is not a simple solution, and may not satisfy your
needs. However, it will work.

The language is Russian, by the way.

Let me know if you find this helpful, as I believe it
represents your only real option.

Bingo!

"...the image is embedded in a webpage inset with a 1-pixel

This has been done to prevent downloading of the images."

Weird behavior can occur when you need to empty your temporary
internet files. If using Internet Explorer, go to Tools-Internet
Options, hit the Delete Files under the Temporary Internet Files
Section.
