Hello. Hank Stram and Jack Buck were the national radio (CBS) announcers for that game. This was reported on page D3 of the San Francisco Chronicle, January 13, 1990: 'HANK STRAM marvels at the consistency of the 49ers. ""When you play 16 games, you become a stock market team, up and down," said Stram, who will be working with Jack Buck on the CBS radio account of tomorrow's NFC Championship Game at Candlestick.' source: Glenn Dickey. "And the Winner Is. . . The Consistent 49ers" San Francisco Chronicle: Jan 13, 1990. pg. D.3 --------- I read the S.F. Chronicle article using a library newspaper database, but you can retrieve it from Lexis-Nexis if you need it: (1) Go to this Lexis-Nexis page: https://web.lexis.com/LNE/ServiceSelection_en.asp (2) Select the $2.50 per document rate. Click on "continue" to bring up the search page. (3) In the "search terms" box, enter: "consistent 49ers" (4) Press the "search" button. (5) 23 results will be listed. The one cited above is #22. The San Francisco Chronicle, JANUARY 13, 1990, SATURDAY, FINAL EDITION, SPORTS; D3 ; GLENN DICKEY ------------- search terms: 49ers, Rams, "cbs radio" 1990 I hope this helps. |

I feel like I ought to provide my search method for the (as it turns out) incorrect information. (Glad I checked with the customer!) I did a google search for <"Pro football hall of fame" telephone> to find the phone number of the Hall of Fame, on the hunch that their archives department might have the information. Archives informed me that they did not have the info, but that the teams would each have an official radio announcer. I did a websearch for <"San Francisco 49ers" telephone> and got the team office's phone number. Their public relations office was extremely friendly and quickly informed me that the 49ers' announcer for that game was Joe Starkey. They also provided me with the telephone number of the Rams. My experience in this matter has been that the offices of the Hall of Fame and of the teams I was able to contact were very courteous and cooperative. The teams themselves seem to be a great place to check obscure bits of information that you might come across. -smudgy. |

Thanks for that information, Smudgy. Yeah, Joe Starkey was the local announcer on KGO 810-AM in San Francisco. His broadcast partner at the time was Wayne Walker. |
