A while back, I heard a song on the radio by the Rolling Stones that I really enjoyed. Don?t remember any of the lyrics, but it had a long, elaborate and beautiful string arrangement at the end (maybe horns too). It kind of reminded me of The Verve song ?Bittersweet Symphony,? where, in the 1990s, that band lifted a Rolling Stones strings hook for their song and then got sued. I am I ignorant about the Stones, so here?s my question: at what time period were they putting out music with florid string arrangements? Please refer me to as many specific albums and songs as you feel necessary. Thanks! |

I don't know if this is the piece you heard or not (most likely not, as there are so many Rolling Stones pearls), but the album "Let it Bleed" (1969, and the pun on "Let it Be" intended) contains many slow pieces, with string section, including the famous "You Can't Always Get What You Want". The Verve, used another masterpiece for their own great song - "The Last Time" (1965, from "Out of Our Heads"). A smaple of which could be heard at Amazon: <http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000003BE4/102-6208557-8020944?v=glance> |

My favourite Rolling Stones song is " Wild Horses ". Wonderful instrumental background in this tune. From a die-hard Stones fan who has been to every one of their concerts,I guess all their songs are my favourites :) |

Yes, Steph, right on the point! I also love Wild Horses (but also in the Patty Smith cover version - have you heard that one?). I thought of another string arrangement (or something that sounds like string and might be electric) song by the Stones: She's a Rainbow (1967, from their "psychedelic" album "Their Satanic Majesties Request"), with a beautiful interlude that sounds like strings. |

Dear stancranley-ga I agree with what the others have said about Wild Horses and She's A Rainbow (by the way, the strings on Satanic Majesties were arranged by John Paul Jones, who went on to play bass and keyboards in Led Zeppelin). Another possibility is Moonlight Mile, the last track on their 1971 album Sticky Fingers. They also got into such sounds a bit on their 1973 album Goat's Head Soup, and possible songs which spring to mind from that album are: Coming Down Again, Winter and Can You Hear The Music. Good luck and hope this helps. |

I've come across this LONG after it was posted. But here goes anyway. The fact that the song was heard on the radio makes me suspect "As Tears Go By". It was recorded both by the Stones and by Marianne Faithful (Jagger's girlfriend at the time). It's a very early song. Heavy on the strings. I think it was the first product of the Jagger/Richard(s) team. Supposedly, their manager of the time (Andrew Loog Oldham - not sure if spelling is right) wanted them to compete with the Beatles and locked them in a room until they came up with a song. Probably around 1965. |

All right--it's been a few months, but I finally got around to listening to some of the songs suggested. I'm now satsified that "She's a Rainbow" was the one I'm looking for. Thanks! I even bought the song from a music downloading website. I'm not completely sure how this site works, but I believe this question has expired. So I think I should repost the question so politicalguru can get credit for his answer. Does that sound okay to you politicalguru? Thanks again for everyone's comments. |
