Whoa. I read an article in the NY Times a few months ago that priced
medallions at $300,000 USD. The only way to obtain a medallion is to
buy one through public auction or purchase one from a retiring driver.

Source:
http://www.schallerconsult.com/taxi/fb/fb4.htm#_Toc50564472

The 50K is a downpayment to a loan officer. Prices for individual
medallions in the latest city-run auction were between $311,000 and
$236,000. Source:

List of 2004 preliminary winning bids from the NYC taxicab commission:
http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/downloads/pdf/unrestricted_indv.pdf
This is also on the NYCTLC homepage:
http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/home/home.shtml

For more info:
http://www.schallerconsult.com/taxi/taxifb.htm

All the other info is correct, but every thing I have seen indicates a
$300,000 dollar price for medallions. If you have a subscription to
the NY Times website, you could very easly dig up the article I
mentioned.
