I technical networking problem that maybe someone knows how to solve.
I having been having problems trying to download files and play
windows media movies. They will stop all of a sudden somewhere in the
middle of the download or playing the movie and never continue. I use
Comcast cable isp with a 3com usrobotics cable modem, 3com hub, and a
linksys router BEFSR11. I have called Linksys several times and still
have not been able to fix the problem. When the computer is plugged
directly into the cable modem the problem goes away, so I believe it
is a problem with the router. Linksys technical support has told me
that I should play around with the MTU settings from 1200 to 1500 but
it has not worked. Comcast has said they have not put any kind of
caps on downloading. I have tried several times to reset things, turn
everything off and wait, ect. Nothing works. Not sure what to do.
Any help in resolving this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Greg

Does this happen with every movie or does the prob appear on specific
sites you visit ? Maybe the problem is not on yout side but a problem
or poor sending bandwith.

Hi,
I've some questions as well:
Have you tried downloading and installing the latest Firmware update
for your router?
Does the problem also occurr with normal file downloads, or only when
streaming movies (in which case it could be a port forwarding
problem)?

I have tried several sites. I have tried windows update, gamespot,
download.com and I have the problem with all of them. For instance I
tried to get Adobe Acrobat Reader from download.com and it wont
complete. I am using Internet Explorer 6 and windows media player
7.01 playing a movie from gamespot. The WarCraft III review file. I
have tried to upgrade the firm ware to the latest version and it did
not work. Thanks for the prompt reply though.

Hello Gregoryew-ga!
I think your problem is most like related to the MTU setting. Let's
see if we can't figure this out. Here are a few questions for you,
let me know the answer and I can work with this question from there:
1. What is your Linksys router's MTU setting at right now?
2. Have you downloaded any software utilities to adjust the MTU on
the PC you're using?
3. Since you're using a router, I'm assuming you may have other PC's
on your network. Do these machines exhibit the same problem?

1. The Linksys Router MTU is currently set to 1500. I have tried it
at many MTU settings from 1200 to 1500 and none of them worked.
2. I have not downloaded any programs to adjust the MTU setting on my
computer. Yesterday I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled the
operating system.
3. The problem seems to occur on all 5 computers in the house.
Thanks for your prompt reply.

Have you considered the possibility that it could be your ISP
connection? I have a UK-based NTL Cable connection, and this
occasionaly has hiccoughs with downloading things that are not caused
on this end of the connection.

I dont think it is the cable because when I plug the cable directly
into the PC and bypass the router it works fine.
