A laptop computer was given away. The laptop had on it email critical
to a civil case against the person who gave away the laptop without
first removing the email. An issue has arisen as to whether the giver
can still claim a privacy interest or other privilege in the email. I
know there must be other cases in which this or similar questions have
arisen [i.e., has all ownership in data been abandoned by giving away
the computer on which it resides?], but I have not yet been able to
locate any. What I am looking for is appellate court opinions on this
issue. There will be a bonus [an extra $15] if an excellent answer,
complete with copy of court opinion and citation, comes today.
