Traumasin adolescent life BY CURTIS SITTENFELD
http://www.salon.com/mwt/feature/1999/02/17feature.html
A judge of the Seventeen magazine fiction contest recalls what was
endearing about the writers of the 400 stories she read -- even the
really bad ones.
"Like everyone else, I have no idea what women want (and I, despite my
name, actually am a woman). But I do know what adolescent girls care
about. How? Last spring, I served as one of five judges in Seventeen
magazine's annual fiction contest, an institution whose former winners
include Sylvia Plath, Lorrie Moore and the dread Joyce Maynard. Among
the 400-plus pieces I read, I ended up picking both the first- and
third-place winners. I also ended up being highly entertained and
unexpectedly charmed by all the stories that the teenage writers chose
to tell."

Tlspiegel,
The information you provided is not relevant because it is out of
date. Perhaps I should have been more clear. I am fairly sure that
this year's deadline is in July and I am looking for the exact date.
Thank you.
Redmango.

I'd like to clarify the phone number I listed in my answer is not
current. The correct phone number is:
917-934-6500
Fiction Editor's name is:
Melanie Abrams
(I'll have the deadline date very soon... and will post it for you
within the hour.) I apologize for the delay, but it appears that the
front office/receptionist caanot locate the information. (Sounds to
me like this is her first day on the job.)
Hang tight...

Please excuse all typos - I'm on my cell phone and trying to type with
one finger while waiting for the receptionist to locate someone in the
office!

Hi redmango,
Thank you for your patience. I spoke with Melanie and the contest for
2004 deadline has passed. (She will be calling me back with the exact
date of when the deadline was, along with the rules for postmarked
time of that date. She 'thought' it was sometime in the spring - like
April 2004.)
She indicated she'll be calling me back sometime later today. Hard to
believe she didn't have the information in front of her, but she is
researching back issues and will let me know.
As for 2005... At this time she isn't sure if there will be a contest.
IF there is one, all rules will be listed in the back (she thought!)
of the November/December 2004 issue.
I'm sorry it took so long to get a definitive answer - but it appears
no one at the magazine has any upcoming information at this point.
Best regards,
tlspiegel

Hi, Thank you so much for all your effort! I could have sworn the
magazine said July...thank you for finding that information for me.

Hi redmango,
Apparently the contest deadline is in July - according to the
information my colleague, rainbow-ga has found. It's odd that the
actual Fiction Editor didn't have that same information. I put in
another call to Melanie Abrams but again, she is not in her office.
(banging my head against the wall here!) Just kidding of course!
However, I will say the Seventeen Magazine office personnel when
speaking with me, acted like they had no clue what the Magazine was
doing from one minute to the next. Strange, eh?
Best regards,
tlspiegel
