Hi, I seem to having a messy problem with my HP laptop. My windows
OS is Windows ME with 256 MB ram. I've got this camera phone Motorola
V300 and I wanted to tranfer data images to my pc. So, I got hold of
the USB data transfer cable and installed media manager and mobile
phone tools software on my pc. But guess, I installed the wrong OS
version and my dlls got corrupted.
I can reboot my laptop and can even naviagte via windows explorer.
Restart / Shutdown everything works fine. However, now none of the
programs work save ms-dos and notepad. No editors (text, images), no
media players, no anti-viruses, no browsers, nothing. Whatever I click
on any program or software, it gives me the error "winmm.dll linked to
missing export ntdll.dll", "rpcrt4.dll linked to missing export
ntdll.dll", "lz32.dll linked to missing export ntdll.dll" and so on.
I got hold of the aforementioned .dll files including ntdll.dll
from www.dll-files.com and replaced the same after booting my system
from the floppy (it won't allow a replace in boot from hard disk on
account of shared violations) yet the problem remains. Guess, they may
not be the right millenium version.
I do not have a Windows Me CD. All I have is the HP factory restore
CD which I do not want to use as I'll lose loads of important data on
my hard drive.
What do I do ? Please help. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I
guess if someone can send me over the windows ME .dll files
(ntdll.dll, rpcrt4.dll, lz32.dll, and winmm.dll) it would help me a
little more to investigate my issue on my own ...
   Thanks in advance

Hi snigdho,

You'll find the ME DLL's here:
Included in this archive:
* DLL's, DRV's, OCX's, SYS's, MPD's and VXD's for WindowsME extracted
from the Windows ME CDROM
http://www.drd.dyndns.org/index2.html

Have you tried your system restore?
To restore your computer settings from an earlier time:
1. Click the Start button.
2. Point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and
then click System Restore.
3. Choose Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.
4. Click a day on the calendar, click the restore point description,
and then click Next.
5. Make sure you have closed all your files and open programs, and
then click OK to close the dialog box.
6. Click Next.

Good luck, snigdho - let me know if that helps.

Thanks hummer-ga for the link. I tried out the link you provided and
have downloaded the error / corrupted .dll files for WIndows ME. I'll
take it on a floppy to my residence and hopefully, I'll be able to
replace and register them and get everything on my laptop to work.
I'll let you know in a day or two how it goes.
As regards to system restore, I cannot go about it as I've disabled
system restore. I did it long back in order to conserve hard disk
space. Guess, I never imagined myself to land up in such a state!!
Thanks a lot. I'll keep you informed.

At this point, without having the disks, you have a few options, but
the one I favor the most is the direct route. Take your computer in to
a repair shop and have them "Ghost" (Make an image) (www.symantec.com
is the maker of said software)the hard drive or ask them to extract
the important files you want to save onto CD ROM. Wipe out (format)
your hard drive and reload the Win ME from the HP factory disk (Use
another OS if you can... ME is crapola)... Then simply copy your old
files back onto your newly redone hard drive. **Caution** Any program
that has an entry in the registry (That's most of them BTW) cannot be
copied over to the new OS. You will need to reinstall all your
software again.. but at least you'll have all your files back! :P

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the suggestion, dcs_tech-ga. However, reloading the OS is
the last option on my mind. Neither do I want to do away with the
programs nor the hard drive contents. I've spent quite some time and
money building on the list of programs that I've currently and I don't
want to start all over again !!!

Well I tried replacing the .dll files which seem to be corrupted and I
did succeed. However, when I tried to register them using regsvr32
only two were successfully registed while ntdll.dll and winmm.dll gave
error messages saying that dlls weren't registered because of being
corrupt or not accurate.
Anyway, I've got most of my softwares to work replacing each of the
corresposding error prone dlls used by the software by extracting the
original .dll file from C:\windows\option\install\cabs, whatever it
was. Some softwares I couldn't get to work ... so I unduly uninstalled
them. Some of the uninstalled ones, I re-installed them and they work
fine now.
Matter is more or less resolved and I can efficiently manage with
where I'm right now. Thanks everyone for your help.
