Thanks for all the suggestions, but I had done everything suggested
here and more before I decided to ask the question, but I thank you
for the comments and suggestions if I have future problems.
The problems seems to have worked itself out, even though I was one of
the last of my kind to be able to log on to the web site. I'll tell
you what I did in the event someone else has the same problem, though
I think my DSL provider was asleep at the wheel, IOW, it just took
them longer. I won't say it was me, though.:-)
First, I wrote to the administrator in Iraq, and eventually got a
return email stating he would be taking care of the problem, and has
partially at that time, paid his domain fees (he's done that before),
hadn't handed over responsability for the Administer pro tem
correctly, but it was close. His ownership of that domain name was up
at the end of July this year so it was a bit sticky.
Other than contacting his temporary replacement and the other
moderators, nothing seemed to word so I thought I would do what I've
learned to do. The funny thing is that I've been using desktop-like
computers since the 1960s, but then everything ended at a terminal on
a mainframe. The first was in the middle sixties on "Ticketron
(Ticket Master later boucht them out)" and technically, it was on a
desktop (OK, a counter top). for the few things I needed to learn
took eight hours of instruction and understanding as I was only 18 at
the time.
This is what I did once I found the we site up but still couldn't bring it up:
I first emptied all caches of everything and everybody, including
caches on IE6, Netscape 6.2, and MSN Explorer. I then went into the
histories even after deleting them as one web site visit can load up
quickly in histories. I did a DNS Flush from the 'command' prompt
also. I then, one by one, tried each browser. Still nothing worked.
I know I am leaving some things out...I just remembered, I also
lowered my security level a bit on IE6 Internet settings, removed any
tool bars I could remove (I had Google on IE6 and I'm aware Netscape
has that toolbar as part of its default installation in 7.x), but when
nothing happened or changed, I reset my security levels to default
settings which were almost the same as mine, anyway).
Actually, the one of the first things I had to do was disable any
firewalls, which was first, and for about thirty minutes, disabled
active virus scanning, but I've had a few infected files so this was
only for a short time.
Still nothing. This morning, about an hour ago, I was able to log on,
so I am not sure what did it except that it had something to do with
the DNS from the default browser (I also have Opera, but rarely use
it).
Since that site's problems began, my computer crashed. While it
wasn't a hard drive crash, it turns out that it was a bad network
card, but I replaced it as soon as a tech said it was probably that.
Well, that may be part of it, and as I'm sure it wasn't the hard drive
(I can still use it, I just can't get online so I think I'll use it
for storage instead of transferring everything at once). I simply
couldn't get in the Internet, so as it is a better computer than the
one I'm using now (I bought downward with the idea of putting in my HP
a much larger HD (at least 40 to 80 MB. It came with a 20 MB drive,
but it also had two CD-ROMS with one for general installation of
programs or reading, the other was a combo CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW for CD
buring. I'm also thinking new Motherboard as even with the PIII chip,
somethomgs just don't work up to speed, etc. I also paid, including
peripherals of a printer and scanner, just over $2000.00 which
included at least one instant rebate of one-hundred dollars, so out
the door it was 2000.00.
So, everything is basically back to normal, but I appreciate your
responses and wanted to thank everyone. I am still a novice at
somethings, even refusing to add memory banks instead of staying with
the 96MB with which it came, but eventually did that. The problem with
having only two banks to install memory meant that I had to removed
the 64MB and 32MB packaged with it so my overall gain is only 160MB.
The new one has four, and I've all ready ordered one more of 256MB for
a total of 512 MB. At home, I doubt I need to do anything else except
for another monitor if I want to maintain the HP.
Although, any suggestions will be taken with thanks. I'm a chief
clinical pharmacist at a medium size acute facility Hospital, and when
something goes wrong with the computer system[s], I call someone.
They don't want me to do anything on my own. OK, but we had a nearly
48 hour crash and in a hospital, that can slown down my practice
considerably, so now, if I am "beyond a medically/cyber certainty,
they do allow minor adjustments. Try writing 5000
orders/labels/billing on each shift by hand. Normally, one can
compound or IV add at a 250 to 350 pershift, for each person doing
them. That is normal. Tripling output including billing, is
imposstilbe, though billing can wait.
Again, Thank you very much.

PS: Yes, I did try another computer (at work, something almost
impossible to do more than the time it takes to log on), and I
couldn't log on to that web site, which is still a mystery to me. Work
does call for a highly secure online connection with suppliers, higher
than most find in other professions, but I didn't use that, I used an
"unsecure" log on.
Anyway, I think I'll still blame the web site or the Internet and quit
knocking my head against the wall. Thank you again...
PPS: No, I couldn't see the forum at all. |
