Depends on your version of outlook , 2002 and XP have a clickable box
for in the add account section , you select http and select the
provider (eg hotmail or msn)

for other Http providers see their help pages for the server address

Yahoo requires you to sign up for theirs at a cost

https works on different ports than pop3... you can't generally use
https (port 443) to connect to a pop3 server (waiting on port 110).

Perhaps some more information?.. are you able to use SOCKS? if you
want to use POP3,
telnet mail.someisp.net 110
must work. The only options are to be able to configure the proxy
server to handle the relay, although your proxy server should handle
the request without issue, especially if it handles via NAT. OR go to
a website like www.mail2web.com to get your mail.

If you could provide more information about how https connection is
the only way this works, or provide information on your proxy
provider, that may help.

I hooked my PC up to the ethernet at work. I was able to access the
web, but Outlook failed. I tried using my ISP's web e-mail interface
and it worked. If your e-mail provider offers web access, try that.

I am not sure if this will help, but if you don't have SocksCap
installed, http://www.socks.permeo.com/Download/SocksCapDownload/index.asp
can help socksify[sic] applications in Windows.

Personally, that's as much assistance as I feel I am able to give. I
hope this works for you.

At this point, I don't know what to say, you may have to configure
some things, like tell the sock app where to look for the socks proxy
server. However, the more we get into this, the more I wonder what is
preventing you from asking your proxy provider these questions?

Is this a corporate office environment or are you using some ISP that
requires you to use SOCKS5 or are you personally using SOCKS5 at home?

I'm not quite sure that any answer any commentor or researcher will
give will be better than answers from the ones who actually set up or
provide your SOCKS proxy. Especially, it's likely that the ones who
set up your proxy didn't allow for POP3 retrieval. It might help if
there is a reason you must be using SOCKS to access Internet. It might
also help to know who exactly is providing this proxy. The proxy
providers might actually have an FAQ to let you know how to do this,
whom to contact, etc.

The point of view from most of the rest of the world is that they are
either directly connected to the Internet or connected via NAT or
other proxy. To them, the connection is invisible, so it's difficult
troubleshooting this question.
