I am interested in buying an a Backup Utility to CD-R media under the following prerequisits: (1)Large files of over 600 Mb should be authomatically Spanned to more than one CD-R. (2)There should be "no limit" as to the File/Folder Name lebgth (some do limit the name length to 64 characters). (3)There should be nolimit as to the Subfolder Depth (sime do limit the number of subfolders to 8 "generations) (4) Big files shouldn't be split over to next CD. (5) If possible, only a simple "one-time" CD-R media should be used (some do use CD-RW). (5)If possible the Backup Utility should'nt use ANY Scheduler for time dependent backups ( I will always perform Full Backups, on files AND on times which I will decide to be appropriate) . (6) I should be able to read the various Folder-Trees from the CD by simply double clicking them and pasting or copying them back to the Hard Disk. (7) When zipped, I should be able to Unzip them by the common "WinZip" Utility. ATT: My PC is working under the Windows XP Professional Op Sys. Note: If there are no Utilities with all the (1)-(7)restrictions,I may settle for some less, the first 4 being the most important. Will you please be so kind and send me a few Utility names, bearing in mind that the most which I am prepared to spend is $25.- to $30.- Nice Regards, Moshe |

I use CDs to backup data files. I just copy them over. What I have found is that CDs are NOT very reliable. So I make two copies. Personally, I would not trust them to make the kind of backups you want to make. They have failed on me so often that I have always made a backup of the backup. New Harddrives are so expensive these days, have you given that any consideration? |

1)Large files of over 600 Mb should be authomatically Spanned to more than one CD-R. (6) I should be able to read the various Folder-Trees from the CD by simply double clicking them and pasting or copying them back to the Hard Disk. (7) When zipped, I should be able to Unzip them by the common "WinZip" Utility. These three requirements are mutually exclusive. Winzip does not support archive spanning, though winrar does. Still I don't know of a backup utility that makes use of a common spanning archive file type such as rar. Any backup program you find that can span contents in this way will probably not be compatible with requirement 6, namely that you can move the files off the disk without any special utility. |
