There are a number of options.  I've done some genealogical research
on the era and have found several sources in microfilm that would be
useful (and easily obtainable via inter-library loan in the U.S.)

1948 or 1848? The gold rush started in 1848, and took of in 1849. The
49ers are named for the gold rush btw.
