Hello Lynx2004,

I have been working on this question for a couple days now, and I have
all of your information except 1 part.
The part I'm having trouble with is finding actual survey information
or trend information on the portion of your question about
surveys/trends about optimism. I have found numerous articles about
the countries and areas you mentioned, regarding having optimism in
certain areas of the countries affairs, however. Would you like me to
go ahead and proceed with answering the question? You're more than
welcome to change the price if you feel that missing that part of an
answer changes the value. Let me know how you feel about this, and
once I hear back from you I'll proceed further.

Hello lynx2004-ga,

Thank you for your patience in the time it has taken to gather this
information for you. I hope this satisfies all of your needs. When you
see a link to the CIA Factbook site, ot Nationmaster, please look
around on their site. I sometimes just linked to the page if there was
a lot of information, or I may have missed a fact you didn't know you
wanted if I didn't link and just gave you relevant information. Those
are such great sites for this kind of statistical information, and I
hope you get all you need and more out of them.

USA

Unemployment:
-The number of unemployed as of May 2004 was at 8.2 million, and the
unemployment rate was at 5.6 percent. The unemployment rate has been
around 5.6 or 5.7 percent every month since December 2003.
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm

Job Shift
-Job shift is estimated at 3.3 million jobs moving out of the USA by
2015. Many of these jobs are Tech jobs being shifted to India. The
Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), states that layoffs during the 1st
quarter of 2004 had 4,633 jobs that were lost due to relocation of
work overseas during the first quarter.

that Economic growth in the 3rd quarter of 2003 were the highest in
almost 20 years.

-?The U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) grew at a brisk 4.2% pace in
the first quarter of 2004. That increase is fast enough to generate
jobs with productivity growth near 3%, and about the average 4.1 %
growth rate for all non-recession quarters since 1970?

Germany

Unemployment:
-The unemployment rates for Germany as of May 2004 are averaged at
10.3% for the total civilian labor force. The dependant civilian labor
force was total 11.5%, males were at 12.3%, females at 10.6%, and
juveniles under 20 years old were at 3.3%.
http://www.destatis.de/indicators/e/arb210ae.htm

Job Shift
-One news report states that Germany?s largest companies have begun to
shift/ or think about shifting over a quarter of their jobs overseas.
For example, Siemans is discussing relocating 10,000 jobs, and it is
estimated over 70,000 tech jobs have been outsourced. VonPier has
relocated 35,000 jobs as well.

Economic Growth
-?The German economy picked up gradually during the second half of
2003, led by exports. Investment also rose in the fourth quarter, but
consumer spending remained weak. There was a sustained recovery in
business confidence during the second half of 2003, but this faded
during the first quarter of 2004. Nonetheless, growth picked up to
0.4% in that quarter. After averaging ?0.1% in 2003, our main
scenario is for growth to pick up gradually to around 1.25% in 2004
and around 2% in 2005, assuming a sustained recovery in world trade
growth as well as a gradual revival in German domestic demand. But the
recent relative weakness of business confidence suggests that risks
remain weighted to the downside. Underlying inflation should remain
subdued, given continued relatively modest growth, although this does
mean that real interest rates are somewhat higher in Germany than in
other major Euroland economies. The budget deficit is expected to
remain around 4% of GDP in 2004, with only a slight decline in 2005.?

Sweden

Unemployment:
-The unemployment rate for Sweden went from 6.0% to 6.4% from January
to February 2004. It was at 5.4% in May 2004.
http://europa.eu.int/comm/eurostat/Public/datashop/print-product/EN?catalogue=Eurostat&product=3-01042004-EN-AP-EN&mode=download

Job Shift:
-The reductions in wage costs for jobs, partly due to outsourcing in
recent years in the business sector have had an impact both on total
wages and on the possibility for wage increases. Overall, this has had
a dampening effect on changes in hourly wages. Total wage costs have
slowed down most in the private service sector.

Economic Growth:
-A great link to the trends and stats for GDP
http://www.scb.se/templates/tableOrChart____36576.asp
-?The economic recovery is progressing slowly, but low inflation has
allowed room for interest rate cuts. The unemployment rate has
continued to rise and employment growth is unlikely to improve
significantly until 2005 despite rising activity levels.
Our main scenario is for GDP growth to pick up from 1.6% in 2003 to
around 2.5% on average in both 2004 and 2005, mainly driven by more
robust consumer spending growth and a pick up in global demand.?

France

Unemployment:
-The unemployment rate for France went from 9.5% to 9.4% from January
to February 2004.
http://europa.eu.int/comm/eurostat/Public/datashop/print-product/EN?catalogue=Eurostat&product=3-01042004-EN-AP-EN&mode=download
**For France and Sweden the definition of unemployed people are those
aged 15 to 74. Following the International Labor Organization (ILO)
definition they are without work, are available to start work within
the next two weeks, and have actively sought employment at some time
during the previous four weeks.**On the Euro Stat site, if you scroll
down, it breaks the unemployment rates down much further, if you?re
interested in that data.

Job Shift:
-As far as job shift in France, it seems that jobs are being created
in France due to job shift. For example:
?France holds 17% of agent positions in western Europe with a
projected growth rate of 26% in 1998-1999. In 1998, there were 75,000
call center agent positions in France with growth projections showing
104,900 agent positions in 2000 and 128,100 positions in 2002. That
leads to a projected 3,000 call centers in France by 2002, nearly
twice the number of call centers that were operating in France in
1997.?
http://www.callcenternews.com/resources/stats_money.shtml
-France represents 12.8 percent of the total European outsourcing market in 2004.
http://www4.gartner.com/5_about/press_releases/asset_63079_11.jsp

Economic Growth:
-?The French economy grew by 0.8% in the first quarter of 2004,
continuing the relatively strong recovery seen in the second half of
2003. Domestic demand made the main contributions to growth in the
first quarter of 2004. The earlier improvement in business and
consumer confidence, however, flattened off during the first quarter
of 2004. Growth averaged only 0.5% in 2003, but this should rise back
to around 2% in 2004 and around 2.5% in 2005 in our main scenario,
assuming no major setbacks in the global economy. However, the budget
deficit looks set to remain above 3% of GDP in both 2004 and 2005.
Inflation picked up to 2.4% in April 2004, due to energy price rises,
but underlying inflation should remain under control over the next
year or two in our main scenario.?

UK

Unemployment:
-Statistics from June 16th, 2004 for the UK show that the unemployment
rate was 4.8 per cent. The number of unemployed people fell, reaching
1.43 million. The number of unemployed men fell to reach 839,000. The
number of unemployed women rose to reach 588,000.
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=12

Job Shift:
-Job shift in the UK is on the rise. Europe enjoyed an increase of 66
per cent in contract award values in 2003.
http://www.silicon.com/management/itdirector/0,39024673,39117829,00.htm
-?In Western Europe, the UK is the largest and most mature market,
representing 35 percent of the total European outsourcing market in
2004?
http://www4.gartner.com/5_about/press_releases/asset_63079_11.jsp
-2.3% of the world?s outsourced IT jobs were in the UK.
http://www.clickz.com/stats/markets/b2b/print.php/3075721

Economic Growth:
-? UK growth picked up speed during the course of 2003, with consumer
and government spending being the main engines of growth, but
investment also showing signs of recovery. The domestic economy
remained relatively strong during the first quarter of 2004, led by
the services sector and retail sales, but manufacturing output fell
back in early 2004 and concerns remain about the build up in consumer
debt levels and a possible future housing market correction. Growth is
expected to accelerate from 2.2% in 2003 to around 3% in 2004 in our
main scenario, but then to moderate to around 2.5% in 2005. Consumer
spending growth is expected to decelerate from recent high levels over
this period as interest rates rise, but investment and exports should
strengthen in this scenario. Inflation is currently well below the
Bank of England's new 2% target for the harmonized EU inflation index
and this is expected to remain the case despite some upward drift in
inflation over the next 12-18 months. In our main scenario, interest
rates are likely to rise further as the economic recovery proceeds,
but this should be a gradual process. Taxes may also need to increase
at some future date to fund longer-term public spending plans while
reducing the budget deficit.?

law permitting Japanese pharmaceutical firms to outsource all phases
of their manufacturing. The revised Pharmaceutical Affairs Law, passed
on July 31, 2002 and scheduled for implementation in April 2005, lifts
decades-old restrictions that limited the percentage of Drug Company
outsourcing by requiring firms to manufacture at least part of the
drugs they produced.?
http://www.outsourcing-asia.com/japan.html

Economic Growth:
-GDP was 2.3% as of Jan 1st, 2004.
?Government-industry cooperation, a strong work ethic, mastery of high
technology, and a comparatively small defense allocation (1% of GDP)
helped Japan advance with extraordinary rapidity to the rank of
second-most-technologically-powerful economy in the world after the US
and third-largest economy after the US and China. One notable
characteristic of the economy is the working together of
manufacturers, suppliers, and distributors in closely-knit groups
called keiretsu. A second basic feature has been the guarantee of
lifetime employment for a substantial portion of the urban labor
force. Both features are now eroding. Industry, the most important
sector of the economy, is heavily dependent on imported raw materials
and fuels. The much smaller agricultural sector is highly subsidized
and protected, with crop yields among the highest in the world.
Usually self-sufficient in rice, Japan must import about 50% of its
requirements of other grain and fodder crops. Japan maintains one of
the world's largest fishing fleets and accounts for nearly 15% of the
global catch. For three decades, overall real economic growth had been
spectacular: a 10% average in the 1960s, a 5% average in the 1970s,
and a 4% average in the 1980s. Growth slowed markedly in the 1990s,
averaging just 1.7%, largely because of the aftereffects of
overinvestment during the late 1980s and contractionary domestic
policies intended to wring speculative excesses from the stock and
real estate markets. Government efforts to revive economic growth have
met with little success and were further hampered in 2000-2003 by the
slowing of the US, European, and Asian economies. Japan's huge
government debt, which is approaching 150% of GDP, and the ageing of
the population are two major long-run problems. Robotics constitutes a
key long-term economic strength with Japan possessing 410,000 of the
world's 720,000 "working robots." Internal conflict over the proper
way to reform the ailing banking system continues.?
