Question ID: 368308
I have network DOS software that needs to access a parallel printer
port to function correctly. In my PC there is no parallel printer
ports but I do have weveral network printers attached through our
network.

How do I capture one of these network printers under XP so it also
thinks that it is a network LPT 1 to 4 printer?

Hi marvaf,

Here you go -

HOW-TO

How to print to a network printer from an MS-DOS-based program in Windows XP:
Method 1
"Use the net.exe command to establish a persistent connection."
Method 2
"Print directly to the printer share..."
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314499

Windows XP TechNote: Printing:
"If you want to connect to a shared printer on Windows XP, using DOS,
Windows 3.x, or from a DOS (16-bit) application under Windows, you
need to map an LPT port to the UNC path using the NET command. For
example: net use Lpt3 \\printserver\printershare"

DOSPRN 1.76:
"DOSPRN allows you to use a good old DOS program with new printers
irrespective of their types (Yes, USB and network printers,
print-servers, and PDF-printers too!)"

DOS Tips in XP:
* Windows XP cmd tip (DOS isn?t dead... it just smells funny) Some
command-line folder creation examples:
* To create multiple folders at once, add them directly to the "md" command:
* C:\> md this is a test
* To create a folder several folders deep, use:
* C:\> md this\is\a\test
* Creating a folder with a long name requires the double-quote at the beginning:
* C:\> md "this is a test
* Bonus tip: Windows XP supports the forward slash "/" as a folder
divider. Unix/Linux users: don't let the DOS environment get you down.
Use a Unix-style CD command to change your present working directory:
C:\> cd Windows/system32/drivers/etc"

I hope I've been able to help get you up and printing - I've not done
this myself but it sounds good. If you have any questions, or if I've
misunderstood your question, please post a clarification request
before closing/rating my answer and I'll be happy to reply.

Thank you,
hummer

most likely that will be impossible since the dos program will
directly address the Lpt port , a better solution would be to buy a
parallel port card (about 15 bucks) and be done with it
