Hello 27east

A php extension is an extension usually used for a webpage rather than
a image file and PHP files are usually used to create dynamic
websites. It is analogous to .html or .htm. If you open this file in
your text editing software (eg Notepad or Word) you should see what
looks like web page code (I would recommend *against* opening this
file in your web browser).

You can find the definition of PHP here:

The WhatIs.com website defines a PHP file as:
"HTML page that includes a PHP script"
http://whatis.techtarget.com/fileFormatP/0,289957,sid9,00.html
http://searchenterpriselinux.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid39_gci334246,00.html

If you know the sender of the email containing the image I would
recommend contacting them and asking them to resend the image as a
.jpg or .png file. It may be that the sender is trying to direct you
to a page on the internet that contains the image, in which case the
URL would look like http://theserver.com/theimage.php, if this is the
case ask them to send the URL written in the text of an email instead
of as an attachment. You can then visit the page at your leisure in
your web browser.

If you have any further quesions regarding this topic please ask for
clarification and I will do my best to help.

Does this mean that the saved attachments cannot be opened in their presnt
form? That is; with the PHP extension?

The php attachment can be opened in its current form but I would only
recommend opening it in a text editor. Malicious PHP files can, under
the correct conditions, be dangerous to open rather like a malicious
.vbs file. The .php file you have been sent cannot be opened in a
picture editor.

Can you try opening the file in Notepad or Word? What does it show you?
