Question ID: 368947
What is the best DHTML JavaScript to use for drop-down menus within a
webpage? I want all menu text to be HTML text rather than using any
images. I want it to work on a wide variety of platforms, in
particular IE 5+ for Mac as well as the obvious PC browsers. I have
found two possible systems so far, called SDDM and Milonic. SDDM seems to
require the main menu items to be images rather than text. Milonic
seems possibly a bit too complicated for our purposes. Can anyone
give me a brief summary of the options available (including these 2)
and the points for and points against each option?

Take a look at DHTML Central, Project: Cool Menus
   - http://www.dhtmlcentral.com/projects/coolmenus/

This is a pretty good menu that works well cross-browser.

I did extensive research on all the options a year and a half ago and
concluded that AllWebMenus from Likno (http://www.likno.com/) were the
most cross-platform capable DHTML menus which did not involve images.
It was the only one that had satisfactory results on Mac IE, in Opera
and Netscape 4. After deploying a couple of these menus I found some
bugs, reported them to Likno, and got them fixed.

At the end of the day, I don't recommend using DHTML menus. They take
a long time to load, they are fragile, they need constant attention as
new browsers (with new bugs) are released. However, AllWebMenus were
by far the best option when I did my survey a year and a half ago.

Unfortunately I can't comment on SDDM and Milonic since I didn't make
notes on the dozen menus which I tested and rejected. They may have
improved since then.

Just a follow-up to my previous comment. Regardless of which menu you
choose, you might be interested in reading this page:
  http://www.likno.com/whatsnew.html
It shows you just how fiddly and fragile these menus are. Every month
new issues surface and have to be dealt with. To Likno's credit, they
are keeping on top of these bugs. If you choose someone else, make
sure that they're still actively developing the menu.
