Hi, I'm looking for a reference that will list literary classics in order of the time periods that they supposedly took place. So for instance, did Dumas' Three Musketeers take place historically before or after Don Quixote (this is not my question, just an example)? This is different than when the classics were written or published--that information is easily obtained and not interesting to me. I'm looking for a relative listing of when the settings of the classics occurred--sort of like a timeline of classics settings. My objective is to combine reading of the classics with the study of history for homeschooling my children. Please no lectures on the historical accuracy of the classics--I'm aware of the issues and will use differences between known history and fictional representations of history as a learning tool. Thanks! |

Hello. Win Scott Eckert's "Wold Newton Universe Crossover Chronology" attempts to put various literary works in chronological order. Some of the works included in the chronology are science-fiction works that would not be considered "classics." However, classics such as Ivanhoe, The Three Musketeers, Treasure Island, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Pride and Prejudice, Oliver Twist, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Gone with the Wind, etc. are well-represented in the chronology. http://www.pjfarmer.com/woldnewton/Chron.htm Also useful is Eckert's character list which features some characters such as Don Quixote who do not seem to appear in the main chronology: http://www.pjfarmer.com/secret/chron/chron/char-revised.htm A similar "Wold Newton" chronology of French literary characters (Hunchback of Notre Dame, Three Musketeers, Cyrano de Bergerac, etc.) appears on the web page of Coolfrenchcomics.com: http://www.coolfrenchcomics.com/wnu2.htm I hope this helps. Good luck in your research. |

rated this answer:![]() What an interesting resource! It wasn't exactly what I had in mind for a couple of reasons: it's based on a science fiction author's concept of related characters and events, and it's hard to tell how comprehensive it is. Those things aside, the reference definitely answers the question and it's a darn good place to start. I'd be interested to see if others have other resources that I could use. Please continue to comment. Thanks for the solid answer and quick response! |
